Donald Mathias, 64, has been indicted for allegedly traveling to the Philippines in 2007 and 2008 to engage in sexual conduct with minors .

Mathias, whose last known residence is in the Southern District of Florida, was arraigned today before Magistrate Judge Barry S. Seltzer in U.S. District Court in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Mathias was charged in an indictment filed on Oct. 27, 2009, with one count of conspiring to engage in illicit sexual conduct in a foreign place and traveling in foreign commerce for the purpose of engaging in illicit sexual conduct; six counts of offering to buy a child in order to depict the child in child pornography; six counts of coercion and enticement of a minor to engage in sexual activity; three counts of traveling in foreign commerce for the purpose of engaging in illicit sexual conduct; and four counts of engaging in illicit sexual conduct in a foreign place.

Mathias allegedly arranged with the mother of two minor females in the Philippines to travel to the Philippines in April 2007 and December 2007 to engage in sexual conduct with the minors and did so. Mathias also allegedly arranged to travel again to the Philippines in December 2008 to engage in sexual conduct with the minors. However, Philippine authorities received information about the arrangements and rescued the children before they met Mathias again.

If convicted, Mathias faces up to life in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.

I'd agree to reinstate castration for crime of this nature if found guilty, but I'm afraid the current administration would find it cruel and unusual punishment and let him off with a warning. Waterboarding would be less cruel than what he aledgedly did to those two young girls, but we outlawed that too. He might get the death penlty in Florida, but that will take years to execute him at tax payer expense. If found guilty, they should send this guy back to the Philippines where they still know how to deal with this kind of crime with machette justice. Mom needs some of the same. Take away the girls and give the kids a good set of new parents.

Of course I have another solution for giving all criminals a second chance. Let's eliminate our overcrowded jails and the death penalty ...let's put the guilty on death row out to roam free in the remote Alaskan Denali Forest with only thier wits. Plenty of area, shelter to live in, and food to eat. If they survive, they live. If they meet a grizzly, they don't. I wonder how they would react when preditor becomes the prey... Problem solved.

vile, yes... but prohibitions against 'cruel and unusual punishment' does not include the phrase 'unless they do something really bad'

If we did it.

Neither would chopping of the hands of thieves... but that isn't a reason to institute such a policy.

Perhaps we should start doing so.

We could stone child molesters while we are at it. Or are you similarly opposed to that also?

“Perhaps we should start doing so.”

Then we could stand with such luminaries of human rights and justice like Saudi Arabia.

There is no reason to permanently cripple people over theft.

“We could stone child molesters while we are at it. Or are you similarly opposed to that also?”

Yes I am. Regardless of the crime there is no cause to resort to such barbaric practices.

Maybe /then/ you will be qualified to answer as to what the punishment should entail.

Otherwise, you are just philosophizing. In the contest between your abstract ideal vs. my visceral actuality, I think mine is more centered in reality.

“Maybe /then/ you will be qualified to answer as to what the punishment should entail.”

Does that mean that you are not qualified to talk about people who have been executed because they were falsely convicted because it has not yet happened to you?

“Otherwise, you are just philosophizing. In the contest between your abstract ideal vs. my visceral actuality, I think mine is more centered in reality.”

You are basing your decision on your emotional desire for revenge… which is not ‘centered in reality’ but rather poisoned by your desires.

What kind of mother whores out her underage daughters? I see that as a worse crime than what this sicko, Mathias, did. Despicable.

I hope they put him away permanently.
