FDA Approves Generic "Morning After" Pill
WASHINGTON -- Another "morning-after" pill with abortion-causing qualities will soon be for sale in stores.
Watson Laboratories has received approval from the Food and Drug Administration to market a generic version of Plan B, a post-intercourse "emergency contraceptive," as it is commonly known, that can cause an abortion.
The new generic drug will be marketed under the name "Next Choice." Like Plan B, it will be available for purchase without a prescription for women 17 years of age and older and for prescription use by girls younger than 17.
Next Choice works, like Plan B, to restrict ovulation in a female. It also can act after conception to block implantation of a tiny embryo in the uterine wall, thereby causing an abortion.
The drug regimen for the "morning-after" pill is basically a heavier dose of birth control pills. Under the regimen, a woman takes two pills within 72 hours of sexual intercourse and another dose 12 hours later.
Plan B, which is produced by the Duramed division of Barr Pharmaceuticals, had American sales of $135 million in the 12-month period ending June 30.
The FDA added its approval of Watson Laboratories' Next Choice on Aug. 28.
When the FDA approved the non-prescription use of Plan B in 2006, Richard Land, president of the Southern Baptist Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission, described it as a "sad day for America."
"Allowing drugs with such powerful physiological and emotional effects to be sold over the counter to adults without a prescription will have significant consequences, none of them good," Land said.
"It will certainly result in the pharmacological, spontaneous abortion of large numbers of babies, who will be conceived but known only to God.... This decision will lead to increased rates of sexual activity for younger women outside of wedlock, resulting in physical, emotional and spiritual consequences, including increased rates of sexually transmitted diseases, against which Plan B offers no protection," he said.

Of this medication . We are not talking about a human life, given the 72-hour window. We are talking about a spot of cells.
We have all likely eaten eggs with a more developed chicken than the "human" Baptist Press is complaining about.
I am concerned about the age at which a young lady can buy this drug without a prescription. In any case I can imagine, if she was in a position wherein she was worried about being pregnant or, more appropriately stated, becoming pregnant, she should seek the advice of a doctor. Birth control pills, even in normal strength, can cause serious or deadly side effects and medical advice is very appropriate.
In a case of rape or other tragedy resulting in a possible pregnancy , she should definately seek medical attention.
Voluntary, unprotected sex is not wise behavior for a 17 year old minor, unless she is trying to have a child. Not a very smart choice. This obviously goes for young men as well, even though the subject of this article is not about male reproductive health .
Yes, unprotected sex spreads STDs.
No, Baptist Press dosen't have my support in their claim that preventing a fertilized egg cell from attaching to the utereus wall is the same as an abortion .
The so called "abortion-causing quality" claim against this drug are over the top.
The plural of 'anecdote' is not 'data'.
SOLARSANITIZER IS OK WITH THE MORNING AFTER PILL!!! Someone mark this day down.

Mr. Land. It is a sad day for America (and the world) if in the 21st century delusional people still use an imaginary sky daddy to try to impose their delusional morality on the rest of us.
There is no evidence whatsoever for any god or gods and the man-made holy books do not quality as proof.
Gods, pink unicorns, tooth fairies, the mercury retrograde, ... are all remnants of our caveman logic (see Caveman Logic by Hank Davies).
Mr. Land, if you want to believe that your personal imaginary pink unicorn does not want you to use condoms , then don't do it and leave the rest of mankind free to live their lives.
"It also can act after conception to block implantation of a tiny embryo...a woman takes two pills within 72 hours of sexual intercourse and another dose 12 hours later."
Typically, one would use a "Morning After" product in the event that some form of contraception wasn't used, or if there was a fear that the contraception used failed (or might fail). Once again, a religious body is attempting to smear a useful contraception product and impose their moral doctrine on an entire society . Conception might not have occurred. And even if conception occured, the cell mass developed within the first 72 hours after conception does not qualify as an embryo.
Richard Land: "This decision will lead to increased rates of sexual activity for younger women outside of wedlock, resulting in physical, emotional and spiritual consequences, including increased rates of sexually transmitted diseases, against which Plan B offers no protection"
To sum up:
1) Southern Babtists would like to dictate the sexuality and sexual activity of young women (with no mention of the emotional/spiritual consequences for young men....got to love the double standard).
2) If the religious fringe actually supported and taught comprehensive sex education , their young MEN & WOMEN would know how to protect themselves for STDs and how to participate in sexual relations responibly.
However, knowledge is power, and no patriarchal
cult is going to allow the "masses" the knowledge required to be an independent, self determined human being that can make personal decisions regarding when/how to become sexually active, or how to express that sexuality.
In other words: Richard Land can kiss my chubby white butt!
Typing too fast! should be "...from STDs" and "...relations responsibly"
Sorry, my bad.
This has got to be the best line from an anti-woman group I've heard yet(!):
"pill with abortion -causing qualities"
LMAO I'm going to remember that for a while! I will now be thinking of other clever ways to refer to drugs . Like: chemotherapy: the chemical with nausea-causing qualities! I love it, come on folks, let's try some more! lol
oh, and that last paragraph... Shed a few years off the clock and tell me that couldn't be reworded for condoms and it would still sound exactly like they said then!
Typical social conservatives, tired old arguments constantly reworded to fit the meme!
