An actress with Down syndrome, who portrayed a character with the syndrome on "Family Guy," said a joke on the show was meant as a jab at Sarah Palin, and not her infant son, Trig.
This controversy started last Sunday in an episode of the Fox animated series. One of the characters on the show had a crush on a girl who has Down syndrome. While on a date, when asked what her parents did for a living, the girl said, "My dad's an accountant and my mom's the former governor of Alaska."
Palin thought that was a dig at Trig, who has Down syndrome. She ripped the show on her Facebook page. Or, we should say, her comment quoted her daughter Bristol criticizing the show. Perhaps Palin didn't want to speak too harshly herself about a show that airs on Fox, since she is a paid contributor to Fox News.
In any case, actress Andrea Fay Friedman told The New York Times, "I was making fun of Sarah Palin, but not her son."

And she wrote in an email to The Times:
"I guess former Governor Palin does not have a sense of humor. I thought the line 'I am the daughter of the former governor of Alaska' was very funny. I think the word is 'sarcasm.'"
Gawker, a Web site covering the media industry, claims the report posted by The Times omitted a line from Friedman's letter:
"My mother did not carry me around under her arm like a loaf of French bread the way former Governor Palin carries her son Trig around looking for sympathy and votes."

In a subsequent appearance on Bill O'Reilly's Fox News show, Sarah Palin said only "cruel, cold-hearted people" would make fun of the mentally disabled.
