Even Arum Once Admitted Pacquiao vs. Mosley was a Bad Idea

| by Alex Groberman

While other news sources are spending their time contradicting each other on the status of the inevitable bloodbath featuring Manny Pacquiao vs. "Splenda" Shane Mosley – Yahoo Sports instead was able to dig up some very interesting quotes.

Courtesy of a Sports Illustrated article from September, check out what Top Rank head honcho Bob Arum had to say regarding a possible bout between his golden boy and Mosley:

"What I've read is not very supportive to make any Mosley-Pacquiao bout. Look, he's going to be 40 and he's in the lighter weights where speed is so important. He's on a show with guys -- example, 20-year-old Saul Canelo Alvarez -- old enough to be his son,"

Interesting. So maybe a Mosley-Pacquiao showdown wouldn’t be the epic struggle of two amazing boxers that Pacquiao’s trainer Freddie Roach is hyping?

Wait, where have I heard that before? Oh yeah, I said this much yesterday.

Heck, don’t take my word for it, though. Let’s see what else Arum had to say in that same Sports Illustrated article:

"I've always considered Shane to be a nice guy but this is what happens to fighters when they age.

"It's like (Bernard) Hopkins, he still knows how to fight but who wants to pay to see him now? His fights are not very scintillating. What you see with Hopkins we're beginning to see with Mosley."

Aside from Hopkins proving over the weekend that he still has some excitement left, what’s changed about Mosley?

Why does Arum suddenly think "Splenda" is the right opponent for the so-called “best pound-for-pound fighter in the world today”?

Perhaps, because he realized that Mosley’s big-time name and zero percent chance will prove to be very profitable for Top Rank. In other words: Cash in and don't jeopardize the Pacquiao golden goose.

So, now that we, Arum and everyone else who remotely follows boxing has come to the conclusion that Pacquiao shouldn’t be thrown into the ring against old man Mosley, what happens?

Hasn’t Pacquiao been referred to constantly as the “people’s champ”?

Time to give the people what they want, Manny. Time to listen to the voters. You mercilessly beating up grandpa Mosley ain’t it.
