A 26-year-old man who escaped from a North Carolina jail March 27 has been found in a nearby field, decapitated.
Kelvin Singleton managed to escape from the jail after constructing a shank from a toothbrush and using it to threaten a guard, media reports said.
Singleton was arrested in January following the armed robbery of a tobacco store. He faced charges of robbery with a dangerous weapon, kidnapping and larceny.
He escaped just one day prior to his planned transfer to Charlotte, North Carolina, where he was to have faced a separate charge of assault.

Police spent several days searching with dogs for Singleton. Officers suspected he may have traveled to Charlotte, where his mother and child live, but no sightings of him were reported there.
A member of a hunting club discovered Singleton’s nude, partially decomposed and headless body April 7 in eastern Bertie County.
Bertie County sheriff John Holley estimated that Singleton’s body had been in the field for a week before it was found. His head has not yet been recovered.
Authorities were able to identify him after taking fingerprints, and because of tattoos on his body, WTKR reported. Some of these tattoos were gang-related, and officers are looking into the possibility that a gang was involved in Singleton’s murder.

“We have interviewed a ton of people,” said Chowan County sheriff Dwayne Goodwin, the New York Daily News reported. “We don’t have a motive or anything at this point – no suspect, no motive.”
Goodwin described Singleton’s death as one of the most bizarre he had seen in his 25-year career.
“The loss of life is sad no matter who it is,” Goodwin added, according to the Roanoke-Chowan News Herald. “He was somebody’s child.”
Officers have asked that members of the public come forward if they have any information about Singleton’s death.
The State Bureau of Investigation has been called in to support the three law enforcement agencies currently involved in the investigation.
