Video: Princess Sofia, Disney's First Latina Princess, is Drawn White

Disney is introducing its first Latina princess in the Disney Channel TV-movie 'Sofia the First: Once Upon a Princess' on Nov. 18 (video below), but viewers might not know she is Latina just by looking at her.

Princess Sofia’s mother, Miranda, has a darker complexion than the other characters, including her daughter, who is drawn very white, reports Entertainment Weekly.

Executive producer Jamie Mitchell told Entertainment Weekly: “She is Latina. It’s sort of a matter-of-fact situation rather than an overt thing.”

Joe D’Ambrosia, vice president of Disney Junior original programming, added: “We never actually call it out. When we go into schools, what I find fascinating is that every girl thinks that they’re Sofia.”

Princess Sofia will also star in an upcoming Disney Channel and Disney Jr. TV series aimed towards viewers age 2-7.
