Well the first poster isn’t much to look at, but Ruby Sparks is a clever and unexpected little romance by the writer/directors of Little Miss Sunshine, Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris (who also happen to be husband and wife). They cast one of the stars of that earlier film, Paul Dano, as a writer named Calvin who literally writes the girl of his dreams and wills her into being. The trailer definitely shows us a sweet, slightly goofy or whimsical side of Dano who can definitely come across as intense.
Calvin (Paul Dano) is a young novelist who achieved phenomenal success early in his career but is now struggling with his writing – as well as his romantic life. Finally, he makes a breakthrough and creates a character named Ruby who inspires him. When Calvin finds Ruby (Zoe Kazan), in the flesh, sitting on his couch about a week later, he is completely flabbergasted that his words have turned into a living, breathing person.

(Confession: I have a slight girl-crush on Kazan after Happythankyoumoreplease)
In less self-assured hands, this could be a disaster. In the hands of Dayton and Faris, however, I think it will be utterly charming. Ruby Sparks also stars Eliott Gould, Chris Messina , Antonio Banderas, Alia Shawkat, Annette Bening, Steve Coogan, Wallace Langham and Aasif Mandvi. Cinematography is by Matthew Libatique who earned an Academy Award nomination for Black Swan. Fox Searchlight will release the film in the US on July 25
