Holy Motors (which had been mistakenly identified as “Holly” Motors in initial reports last year) is a quirky little French film that debuted to critical and award winning acclaim at the Cannes Film Festival back in May. A lot of the American attention on the film was due to the fact that one of the stars of the movie is Eva Mendes and she and her boyfriend Ryan Gosling were photographed all over Paris when he visited her during filming.
There’s a lot of arty French weirdness at play here. The kind Americans either love or hate. I’m intrigued. Director Leos Carax (and admittedly I don’t know his work) seems to be a fan of Wim Wenders (Wings of Desire – the inspiration for the Nicholas Cage opus City of Angels). Check out the Australian trailer:
“From dawn to after nightfall, a few hours in the life of Monsieur Oscar, a shadowy character who journeys from one life to the next. He is, in turn, captain of industry, assassin, beggar, monster, family man.
Popular VideoThis young teenage singer was shocked when Keith Urban invited her on stage at his concert. A few moments later, he made her wildest dreams come true.
He seems to be playing roles, plunging headlong into each part… but where are the cameras? Monsieur Oscar is alone, accompanied only by Céline, the slender blonde woman behind the wheel of the vast engine that transports him in and around Paris. He’s like a conscientious assassin moving from hit to hit. In pursuit of the purely beautiful act, the mysterious driving force, the women and ghosts of past lives. But where is his true home, his family, his rest?”
Carax directs Denis Lavant (The Lovers on the Bridge) with Edith Scob (Summer Hours), Eva Mendes and Kylie Minogue supporting.
Holy Motors will be screen at the Licarno, Venice and Toronto Film Festivals and be released in the UK on 28th September. No word on a US release, but rights have been acquired so expect one before the end of the year.
