Video: Kirk Cameron Says Homosexuality is "Unnatural" and "Destructive"

article image

Former "Growing Pains' star, ex-Atheist and current born-again Christian Kirk Cameron appeared on 'Piers Morgan Tonight' last week where he called homosexuality “unnatural” (video below).

Cameron said, “I think that it's unnatural. I think that it's detrimental and ultimately destructive to so many of the foundations of civilization. So do I support the idea of gay marriage? No, I don't."

The former sitcom star said that if his children came to him and admitted that they were gay his response would be: “I wouldn't say 'That's great, son, as long as you're happy.' There are all sorts of issues we need to wrestle through in our life... Just because you feel one way doesn't mean we should act on everything we feel."

The gay and lesbian activist group GLAAD hit back with a statement: “Cameron is out of step with a growing majority of Americans, particularly people of faith who believe that their gay and lesbian brothers and sisters should be loved and accepted based on their character and not condemned because of their sexual orientation."

UPDATE: Kirk Cameron defends his anti-gay remarks in an email to ABC News.

BTW, did anyone realize that

BTW, did anyone realize that Rush Limbaugh does NOT have any children? Married 4 times; no children. He goes to the Dominican Republic, with tons of viagra, where you are allowed to have sex with underaged children. It's been long, long, LONG rumored that he is also homosexual.

"In May 2004 Rush's third wife, Marta, grew tired of never having sex with her allegedly closeted homosexual of a husband, and so asked for a divorce. Limbaugh complied after his desperate wife agreed to never reveal the true nature of Rush's sexual perversion"

The prescription was not in Limbaugh’s name, but no charges were filed against Limbaugh, who was returning from a vacation in the Dominican Republic with four male companions."

I found that article to be

I found that article to be quite interesting in that he condemns others for doing the same things that he has gotten away with, expects that there be one standard of acceptable behavior for himself and another for those others and refuses to take responsibility for his own words and actions.

Is this REALLY the kind of person you want representing ANY political party?

But Limbaugh is a topic for the thread on his ignorant lies about the contraception issue.

This is classical "reaction

This is classical "reaction formation" from Freudian psychoanalysis. The people most threatened by homosexuality are the ones who are reacting to what they hate most in themselves.

For the rest of us who are not gay, we might be appalled when we are hit on by someone of the same sex, otherwise it just doesn't matter.

This is why I support gay rights - I am comfortable in my heterosexuality and don't view gay people as threats to me or mine. People are people. Who they sleep with is not my business if the act is between consenting adults.

Raptorcat's picture

I've been "hit on" by gay

I've been "hit on" by gay guys and with only one exception they have been very respectful and understood that NO means NO. My wife wishes that more straight guys respected and understood the "NO means NO" policy.

Kind of makes one wonder where our moral compasses are pointing when the ones that we, as a society, ostracize have more people within that group that are more respectful of others than those of our own group.

It makes me question who the "good guys" really are. Kirk Cameron, for one, could take a lesson from that, but he considers anything that exists in nature to be an abomination......unless it happens to be written in his version of the bible.

I have to ask. Why do you

I have to ask. Why do you have problems believing what USMCVET said? Is it because you actually believe that Kirk Cameron will ACTUALLY hold himself accountable for his words and actions?

He is a modern day far right wing Christian that believes in a lot of idiotic things. So far, the people of his ilk have consistently blamed others for their mistakes, for their words and their actions.

I have family members that are of a wide variety of faiths, mostly Christian sects, and only one is as far gone as Cameron is. the rest hold themselves accountable by making sure that they don't say or do something stupid that they will regret; and when they do, they take accountability for it.

Some of us call that "being humble" and being honest. Isn't that one of the Qualities that the Christ myth promotes? (and yes, it is a myth; a retelling of much older tales from the Pagan religions in the Middle East and Northern Europe - see Odin, Gilgamesh, Horus for examples)

Every objective study ever done regarding homosexual behavior and its effects on individuals and society vindicate Cameron's beliefs. In fact, "beliefs" isn't really the right word when the facts bear out his views so overwhelmingly.

James Smith's picture

How about some links to those

How about some links to those "objective" studies? Or will the links show they were far from objective or perhaps not exist at all? So far you seem to have been far from truthful or intellectually and ethically honest.

Raptorcat's picture

You should have the moniker

You should have the moniker of liemonger. There are NO legitimate studies that bear out any truth to Kirk Cameron's ignorant views. NOT A SINGLE ONE THAT IS LEGITIMATE.

I am sure that the Christo-fascists have made up some "studies" that agree, but that is like their creationist "science experts", most all of which are simply con artists with a good-sounding shpiel.

Sounding right and being right are not the same thing and without facts to back you up, they are complete opposites.

LEGITIMATE study after study has shown that children raised by gay/lesbian couples have a higher tendency, than those raised by straight couples, toward tolerance of others, just as ONE point, and a significantly higher probability of growing up well adjusted than children raised in Christian or Muslim households.

Major institutes of higher education, such as Harvard, Cambridge, UCLA and others around the world have all come to the same conclusions; that being that the opinion of homosexuality, being a natural and genetic occurrence, does not make one a bad parent any more than being a genetic redhead, brunette or blonde does.

I'm not calling you a liar, but the SCIENCE IS CALLING YOU AND KIRK CAMERON AND THE RELIGIOUS WRONG A LIAR.

I'll trust science before I'll trust your religion. At least science has never let us down.

Tell you what. Let's compare the times science has let us down to the times religion has failed us. In the case of religion, it's easy. It fails every time, 100%. Now you point out when science has failed.

Yes, I do expect you to ignore or evade the question Your other alternative is to lie.

Raptorcat's picture

And let's address the bad

And let's address the bad things that science has created. Biological weapons, poisons, nuclear weapons, high explosives.....yes, those are all bad things, but they were developed by men who wanted to use the science to make weapons. And most of those men were "good Christian" men.

The church, according to it's ORIGINAL teachings was supposed to be about tolerance and acceptance and love and peace.

It is Christians that sought power, just like our current batch of GOP candidates, that twisted those lessons and perverted them into all of the bad things; intolerance, hatred, power-mongering, war-mongering, et al, that the church has become responsible for; the same things that YOU are defending; that Cameron is defending.

Like all dominionist Christians, you pick and choose which parts you want to believe in. That is a pretty shallow belief system when you can be considered a good person while being a hypocrite that contradicts your own religion's CORE values.

You can change that, though; the solution is simple.

Stop following the false prophets that your Jesus myth talks about and warns against following.

Raptorcat's picture

No. I am not. The Church

No. I am not. The Church has a long and bloody history of failure of integrity, failure to respect human rights and dignity; maybe you never heard of the Crusades, the various wars against protestants by Catholics (and visa versa), the inquisition, the "requirement", the european and Salem witch hunts, the Maleus Malefecorum, and all of the other lesser events INSTIGATED by Christianity against others. Islam is intolerant of Christianity because Muslims have very long memories and the 3 Crusades were nothing but a church induced land grab for conquest and conversion. In that case, since Christians seem to forget, Jerusalem was the birthplace of Judaism. Christianity and Islam are just the bastard children of Judaism.

If those older histories are too much for you to look up, then let's mention groups such as the People's Temple (Jim Jones), the Branch Davidians, the WBC, DWOC, just to name a few.

Then there is also the LIE that is creationism/intelligent design/whatever name they are using this week to hide the lie. All of that is religion letting us down.

How about the fact that much of the scienctific and technological knowledge that we lost after the fall of Rome was due to the heresy laws created and enforced by the church.

Nicolas Cupernicus was threatened with death, by the church, under heresy laws (Christian sharia), for wanting to publish his findings that the Earth was NOT the center of the universe and that it revolved around the sun. He had those findings published while in his death bed. Da Vinci was imprisoned for heresy because of his studies of the human body, which helped advance medicine.

And those are just 2 examples of the church letting us down. Until a wise doctor (doctors are scientists, too) during the civil war noticed that scrubbing up before surgery reduced infections caused from surgery, doctors didn't do that. Thank SCIENCE for that, not religion. It was scientists that came up with all of the cures to diseases that we now shrug off or never have to deal with at all. Religion has fought those advances tooth and nail for centuries. Even opposing to the teaching of evolution science, which is a PROVEN fact (don't confuse the common use of the word theory with the scientific use of the word theory).

Religion has been used as an excuse to do harm more than science has. History shows that to be true. Religion has been used as the excuse for, wars of conquest, forced conversion, heresy laws (in Islam it would be sharia law-same thing, different name), allowing slavery, opposing blacks marrying, opposing inter-racial marriage, supported racial discrimination and even the Holocaust in Germany (you probably don't know that Hitler was a Christian, even though he was obsessed with the occult, as many Christians were in those days, and the Vatican was surreptitiously giving his efforts aid) and now opposing gay marriage.

The church, initially, had no problem with gay marriage and even sanctified such marriages. I believe that I posted links to those references in another post here.

Next time come to class prepared.

How much do you want to bet that your fact-filled post will be ignored by the religious reich here? That's their most common strategy, when presented with something they cannot handle, they like to pretend it never happened and declare, "Victory in the name of (some deity)!"

Recently I read this, "Debating a theist is like playing chess with a pigeon. No matter how good you are at chess, the pigeon knocks over all the pieces, craps on the board, then struts around as if it had won." I have never heard this expressed better and wish I had thought of it.

Could it be that they orders of magnitude more likely to be picked on by their peers and abused or abandoned by their parents? Could it be that right wing hate mongers such as yourself tell them they are evil from day one? Could promiscuity be a side effect of never being allowed to have a relationship out in the open for fear of persecution?

Kinda makes you go hmm.... Maybe the reason gays have so many issues is because people like you cause them.

I didn't win every fight, but I won most of the time and made it very painful for opponent even when I lost.

If you say something it is because you have a right to say it. If someone says something you don't agree with, now it's "hate speech." What garbage. And there's nothing gay about homosexuality. Why don't you call it what it is?

Homosexual behavior is very common in the animal kingdom. Google "bonobo social habits," to see a species very similar to humans and how they engage in homosexual behavior almost daily. The only thing unnatural about homosexuality is the obsession of the right wingers with trying to stamp it out of existence.

The best response to homosexuality is "who cares?" It shouldn't matter to you what two consenting adults do in the bedroom who are not involving you.

"I am straight, but I am not narrow."

I don't quote bumper stickers often, but I agree with that one.

State of Reason's picture

Funny, I look down in the

Funny, I look down in the mirror (actually, I can just look straight down, I don't even need a mirror) and I see that my male parts fit in a number of different places of my fiance's female parts and some of those parts I fit in on her are the same types of parts that other males have. So, your argument about male and female parts matching up is completely ignoring a number of perfectly useful parts.

Please define "unnatural" for me. We've documented homosexual behaviors in several hundred other species and we've documented long term homosexual partnerships in over one hundred species both in the wild and captivity. So, I'm unsure how homosexuality could be called unnatural.

Even if we were to assume it's "unnatural" I don't see how that matters. Cars are unnatural. Plastic is unnatural. Most modern medicine is unnatural and certainly pacemakers and prosthetic's are very unnatural. Transplants are so unnatural that we have to take unnatural medication every day to keep our natural systems from destroying the transplanted organs. So, are you going to suggest that something's bad just because it's unnatural?

As for Kirk's statements, I don't consider it hate speech. It's just ignorant. If he does have a gay child I hope it opens his eyes to reality and he can see that his god would want him to love his child, not judge him for what he is. I always wonder why anyone gives a damn what any celebrity says.

Raptorcat's picture

You are right, it doesn't

You are right, it doesn't take a whole lot of intelligence to see those the difference between male and female parts, but it also takes absolutely NO intelligence to completely ignore the facts and evidence that we are part of nature and homosexuality is part of nature. of course, if you are a scientologist then you believe that we are not a part of nature and are therefore not constrained by it's genetic laws. I don't buy that stupidity either, since the EVIDENCE is overwhelming. You hate gays; we get that. After all what is more natural than the primitive attitude of "different is inferior and an enemy to our ways"? Sorry, but you lost you point on the reality that hatred of homosexuals is the same as hating people who are tall, short, black, white, Asian, female....need I go on? These are all things that a person is born as, JUST LIKE SEXUALITY. We don't get to choose, so, if you believe that you get a choice, at what age did you DECIDE to be straight? Or did you have a choice? If you say that homosexuality is an abomination against your "god", then explain why in "God's natural world" does it exist at all? You see where your logic is leading you? you are just trying to justify hate-mongering, the same as your kind tried to justify arranged marriages, slavery, opposition to blacks getting married, inter-racial marriage and why the church eventually stopped the practice of sanctifying gay marriage in the first place (http://thinkprogress.org/lgbt/2012/02/03/418688/santorum-gay-marriage-privilege/) (http://www.care2.com/causes/lord-careys-fact-free-case-against-gay-marriage-examined.html) (http://www.gaychristian101.com/Gay-Marriage.html) (http://www.randomhistory.com/history-of-gay-marriage.html).

BAd argument deserves evidentiary truth to combat it. And your religion has no right to impose it's prejudice on the rest of the nation. That one is covered by the 1st Amendment. The right of even gays to marry is covered under the 14th amendment. Read the Constitution more and your fatally flawed bible less and you may just learn something.

He is using a religion, that originally sanctioned gay marriage (http://www.randomhistory.com/history-of-gay-marriage.html)(http://www.gaychristian101.com/Gay-Marriage.html) and has since fallen prey to false prophets (didn't Jesus warn against following false prophets?) and an anti-fact/anti-science agenda that would happily turn this nation into another collapsed "Roman empire" and return us to the same period of ignorance that Europe suffered from during the dark ages.

Society changes and those that are incapable of adapting eventually die off.....that also supports evolution, which is another subject in which Kirk Cameron does not believe the scientific evidence.
