Video: Bill O'Reilly Worries that 'Glee' May Turn Children Gay

article image

On Thursday's 'The O'Reilly Factor,' host Bill O’Reilly said that if “unsupervised children” watch 'Glee,' they might go out and experiment with “alternative lifestyles” such as homosexuality and transgender (video below).

O’Reilly said when he was younger and saw James Dean smoking, it made him want to smoke.

Guest Gretchen Carlson said: “I wholeheartedly believe in today’s society that kids are experimenting with homosexuality.”

They make these types of issues “glamorous,” O’Reilly added.

The regressives *need* to

The regressives *need* to convince society in general that being gay is a choice and that it's not just the way people are born. If they're unsuccessful in that endeavor, it highlights the bigoted and drastically flawed nature of their religious beliefs - beliefs that say people are gay because they choose to do evil, that being gay is destructive to not just the people who are gay but also those around them, and that it's possible to just stop being that way if you just believe strongly enough in their imaginary god. Of course, failing to stop being gay just means that your belief in god isn't strong enough and you need to pray more and give the church more money to drive the message of the "lord" home to you.

Plus, if people think it's ok to be gay, then how are all these nice religious folk going to drive them to kill themselves? Persecuting all these gay people is hard work!

Remember, since O'Liely's show is billed as opinion, he's under no obligation to ever tell the truth. Faux news fought one of their own fired employees in court to establish their right to lie to the public and report as fact items that they knew to be false, just so they can sell their narrative of conservatives good, everyone else bad.

You are prejudiced against

You are prejudiced against the traditional position and bigotted against those who hold it, no doubt because you were indoctrinated to be this way. The success of recent efforts to normalize homosexuality are nothing short of a case of mass insanity!! This is the only way to describe a situation in which millions of people have suddenly rejected what all cultures in history have regarded as obvious fact. Homosexuality is neither normal nor good, either from a religious standpoint (including all major religious traditions) or from an evolutionary one (since homosexual behavior does not promote the survival of any species).

People can have tendencies to same-sex attraction for a variety of reasons (such as early childhood experiences and, yes, because they are encouraged by peers or role models to explore this). These tendencies are not chosen in many cases, but whether or not one is going to live according to these tendencies is always a choice that one will have to answer to God for. And no one has ever given me an explanation for why depression rates and suicides keep going up even when there is unprecedented support for the LGBT lifestyle or in enclaves where this lifestyle is consistently encouraged. The only real explanation is that homosexual practice leads to guilt because all people have God-given consciences that tell us it is sin. It is this guilt more than anything that leads to confusion due to conflicting pro-homosexual messages from the culture, which leads to alienation, depression and, in some cases, suicide.

I now believe that the militant efforts to normalize homosexuality are the front line of the Culture War. If the pro-LGBT side keeps pushing, the opposition will keep pushing back and it's going to get uglier and uglier.

cityboy's picture

You are right that I am

You are right that I am prejudiced against the "traditional" position. You are wrong that I was indoctrinated to be that way. I used to hold to those "traditional" world views, but after deciding to closely examine them and where they stood with respect to actual facts, as well as looking at my own motivations for believing in them, I discarded them as the refuse they were.

I'll accept your claim that homosexuality is neither normal nor good the day you can provide any evidence supporting that position that doesn't originate in some silly religious text. Homosexual acts have been observed occurring in over 400 different animal species, so any claim that it is unnatural or not normal have quite a bit of contradictory evidence to overcome.

Your claim that all major religious traditions are anti-gay can be easily be disproved with one word: Buddhism. There's nothing in that faith regarding homosexuality, and they don't care if their priests are gay or not.

As far as evolution not supporting homosexual behavior, you've provided the expected 4th grade level answer of exclusively homosexual behavior in the context of a single pairing of animals. In reality, most animals and many humans don't engage in either homosexual or heterosexual behaviors exclusively, but tend to prefer one over the other to many varying degrees. These are also affected by societal and population pressures, as well as the availability of mates. We're in the midst of a huge experiment of THAT nature currently with China and India - where people believe that male children are far more desirable, since they will be able to support their parents in their old age, and they abort or kill at birth female children. With a 3 or 4 to 1 ratio of males to females, there's only four possible outcomes: 1) widespread accepted prostitution, 2) widespread homosexuality, 3)& 4) war to procure, or the monetary purchasing & importation of females to meet the needs of millions of single, horny guys.

The reason you've been ignoring for why depression and suicides have been going up for gays, despite increasing public support for acceptance of them, is that more and more intolerant people are bullying, degrading, and persecuting them. Supportive billboards and TV shows can't do nearly enough to combat public shaming and weekly physical beat downs by the local chapter of Campus Crusade For Christ and half of the school football team.

> or in enclaves where this lifestyle is consistently encouraged.

You're mistaking support for people who are gay with encouraging people to become gay - most folks that are gay would choose to be straight if they could, if only to avoid the above mentioned humiliation and persecution, or the normal human desire to fit in with one's peers; but since it isn't something that the individual chooses, they can either embrace who they are or live their lives hating who they are.

Continually threatening gay people with things like "god hates you" and "you'll have to answer to god" will just drive more people to realize that most of what religion has to offer, beyond bland reassuring platitudes, is discrimination and hate of anyone that doesn't believe the things they do, and that it's much better to just do without a belief in gods and be good people on their own.

What do the gay people want that is so offensive to you? They'd like to be able to live their lives with the same legal rights to be with each other that everyone else already has. They aren't asking you to do anything other than treat them the same as other people, and they aren't going to do anything to you - what happens inside their bedroom definitely does NOT involve you.

Wow, you must have taken a David Barton History class "what all cultures in history have regarded as obvious fact. Homosexuality is neither normal nor good" is a blatantly false statement. As soon as you bring in the religious excuse, all rational thinking has stopped. All you are doing is trying to enforce your own religious prejudices upon everyone.

What is uglier and uglier is the panic reaction of the religious reich that people are waking up and rejecting the BS they've been spreading and leading decent lives without the threats of a fake god.

Couple of problems, @Duke1CA.

Couple of problems, @Duke1CA.

1. Homosexuality is observed in nature among multiple species. Instead of taking the time and energy to compile a list of URLs to primary sources demonstrating this contention, I will refer you to Wikipedia which has done a damn fine job collecting these sources in one easy-to-find location already:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homosexual_behavior_in_animals

2. "Tendencies to same-sex attraction" have not been in any way influenced by "early childhood experiences" or being "encouraged by peers or role models". To date, there are no reliable studies that indicate an increase in the occurrence of homosexuality due to environmental factors.

3. Homosexuality is already "normalized". Take a walk around in your neighborhood and say hello to a few people. Chances are you will be greeting more than one homosexual person during this stroll. The only people at this point who don't seem to realize this are the same ones who are responsible for the de jure status of homosexual partners not reflecting the de facto situation. There are zero non-religious reasons to deny homosexuals the same rights and privileges as any married couple enjoys.

4. There is no such thing as a "pro-LGBT" side. In 2012, the only two sides to this "debate" are "hyperreligious wingnuts who firmly believe that their deity of choice gives them the right to legislate what happens in the bedrooms of two consenting adults" and everybody else.

Other than those minor points? Fine post.

Thank you for showing all of

Thank you for showing all of us what an intolerant, ignorant jerk you are. That makes it easy to justify ignoring everything you post as being a worthless pack of lies and intolerant ravings.

Thanks again for saving everyone from wasting time upon a homophobic jerk. BTW, here's a little psych evaluation for you.

http://www.livescience.com/19563-homophobia-hidden-homosexuals.html

Homophobes should consider a little self-reflection, suggests a new study finding those individuals who are most hostile toward gays and hold strong anti-gay views may themselves have same-sex desires, albeit undercover ones.

The prejudice of homophobia may also stem from authoritarian parents, particularly those with homophobic views as well, the researchers added.

"This study shows that if you are feeling that kind of visceral reaction to an out-group, ask yourself, 'Why?'" co-author Richard Ryan, a professor of psychology at the University of Rochester, said in a statement. "Those intense emotions should serve as a call to self-reflection."

The research, published in the April 2012 issue of the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, reveals the nuances of prejudices like homophobia, which can ultimately have dire consequences. [The 10 Most Destructive Human Behaviors]

"Sometimes people are threatened by gays and lesbians because they are fearing their own impulses, in a sense they 'doth protest too much,'" Ryan told LiveScience. "In addition, it appears that sometimes those who would oppress others have been oppressed themselves, and we can have some compassion for them too, they may be unaccepting of others because they cannot be accepting of themselves." Ryan cautioned, however, that this link is only one source of anti-gay sentiments.

Hidden homosexuality In four studies, the researchers looked at the discrepancies between what people say about their sexual orientation and their implicit sexual orientation based on a reaction-time test. The studies involved college students from Germany and the United States. For the implicit measure, students had to categorize words and pictures flashed onto a computer screen into "gay" or "straight" groups. Words included "gay," "straight," "homosexual" and "heterosexual," while the pictures showed straight and gay couples. Before each trial, participants were primed with the word "me" or "others" flashed momentarily onto a computer screen. The researchers said quicker reaction time for "me" and "gay," and a slower association of "me" with "straight" would indicate said an implicit gay orientation. [Why Gay Parents May Be the Best Parents] In another experiment, the researchers measured implicit sexual orientation by having participants choose to browse same-sex or opposite-sex photos on a computer screen.

Questionnaires also teased out the parenting style the participants were exposed to, with students asked how much they agreed or disagreed with statements such as: "I felt controlled and pressured in certain ways;" and "I felt free to be who I am." To gauge homophobia in a household, students responded to items such as, "It would be upsetting for my mom to find out she was alone with a lesbian" or "My dad avoids gay men whenever possible."

Participants indicated their own level of homophobia, both overt and implicit; in word-completion tasks, students wrote down the first three words that came to mind when prompted with some of the words' letters. Students were primed at some point with the word "gay" to see how that impacted the amount of aggressive words used.

Controlling parents In all of the studies, participants who reported supportive and accepting parents were more in touch with their implicit sexual orientation, meaning it tended to jibe with their outward sexual orientation. Students who indicated they came from authoritarian homes showed the biggest discrepancy between the two measures of sexual orientation. "In a predominately heterosexual society, 'know thyself' can be a challenge for many gay individuals," lead author Netta Weinstein, a lecturer at the University of Essex in the United Kingdom, said in a statement. "But in controlling and homophobic homes, embracing a minority sexual orientation can be terrifying." [5 Ways to Foster Self-Compassion in Your Child] Those participants who reported their heterosexuality despite having hidden same-sex desires were also the most likely to show hostility toward gay individuals, including self-reported anti-gay attitudes, endorsement of anti-gay policies and discrimination such as supporting harsher punishments for homosexuals.

The research may help to explain the underpinnings of anti-gay bullying and hate crimes, the researchers note. People in denial about their own sexual orientation, perhaps a denial fostered by authoritarian and homophobic parents, may feel a threat from other gay and lesbian individuals. Lashing out may ultimately be an indicator of the person's own internal conflict with sexual orientation.

This inner conflict can be seen in some high-profile cases in which anti-gay public figures are caught engaging in same-sex acts, the researchers say. For instance, evangelical preacher and anti-gay-marriage advocate Ted Haggard was caught in a gay sex scandal in 2006. And in 2010, prominent anti-gay activist and co-founder of conservative Family Research Council George Rekers was reportedly spotted in 2010 with a male escort rented from Rentboy.com. According to news reports, the escort confirmed Rekers is gay.

"We laugh at or make fun of such blatant hypocrisy, but in a real way, these people may often themselves be victims of repression and experience exaggerated feelings of threat," Ryan said. "Homophobia is not a laughing matter. It can sometimes have tragic consequences," as was the case in the 1998 murder of Matthew Shepard, a gay man.

Also, please add some respected scientific references to back up your claims, such as "queer`s prey on children who have the "tendencies" it makes it easier for you`ens to victimize children. My opinion (which has been backed up by 30-some years of personal research and most of the scientific community, but hey, here are a few links as well, just to make myself happy http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/gays-anatomy/200809/homosexuality-and-pedophilia-the-false-link http://psychology.ucdavis.edu/rainbow/html/facts_molestation.html) is that gay people and straight people are essentially the same in all ways but the obvious: being attracted to those of the same sex, versus to the opposite sex. Pedophiles are pedophiles. Gay people are gay people. They are not the same. Some gay people might be pedophiles, but then so might straight people. In fact, most studies that identify pedophiles report that the majority are straight. Anyway, back to my point. Either back up your claim with citation of fact or relabel it as opinion, please. Otherwise your ignorance is showing big time my friend.

Mr. O'Reilly must either be a repressed closet gay or a real wimp of a man for making his bigoted comments. Just what harm is done to individuals who experiment with alternative lifestyles and then decide for themselves that it "is" or "is not" for them? Why do we view sex as sinful. It's no more sinful than emptying one's bladder or any other bodily function. Why Fox News has become the loud mouthpiece for narrow mindedness in this country that enshrines in its Constitution diversity and pluralism, yet never practices what it preaches is beyond my comprehension. The USA is in decline because of people like O'Reilly who cannot accept that our culture is NOT absolutely fixed in time, but evolves.

Each time we think this idiot

Each time we think this idiot has reached the depths of his stupidity, he shows us that he can even be more ignorant than we thought.

He's clearly buying into the thoroughly discredited lie that gay is a choice. What seem to be a choice is remaining willfully ignorant. That's one he made long ago and he's sticking with it because it's much easier for him than thinking.

Because when he was younger and wanted to smoke because he saw James Dean doing it is a confession of his stupidity, not evidence of anything relevant.

That Fox entertainment gives this fool even a minute of airtime shows they are far more concerned with revenues than truth. Both O'Reilly and the Fox network are disgusting example of what's wrong with the USA today.

Steve Boyd's picture

God, James, I can't believe

God, James, I can't believe that I'm about to defend O'Reilly. Unless I misinterpreted what he was saying, I think his argument was that unsupervised kids watching Glee would want to experiment with homosexuality activity, not that it would actually TURN them gay.

In this way the headline to this story is a little misleading. He stopped just short of saying what this headline says.

Gretchen Carlson said something about "in today's society, kids are encouraged to experiment, it's glamorous" or some such drivel. That has been true since forever. What kid DOESN'T experiment with a lot of things; drugs, sex, alcohol, whatever? Carlson and O'Reilly talk as though it's only NOW that kids suddenly are experimenting because they watch Glee.

I fail to understand what the

I fail to understand what the problem with kids experimenting with sexuality is here. It's not like experimenting with homosexual tendencies is going to get anyone pregnant. . .hence there's actually less risk than experimenting with heterosexuality, no? The risk for disease is roughly equivalent if one is sexually active, so really, who is harmed as long as these kids are careful and/or not having actual sex?
