Saturday Night Live Parody of 'Gravity' and Govt. Shutdown (Video)

| by Michael Allen

Saturday Night Live parodied the film "Gravity," which stars Sandra Bullock and George Clooney as two astronauts who are marooned in space after debris destroys their space station.

Playing the two astronauts, Kate McKinnon and Taran Killam call NASA for help, but are answered by a janitor, Kenan Thompson, because the rest of NASA was sent home per the federal government shutdown, notes Mediaite.com (video below).

After the astronauts tell Thompson that they are running out of oxygen, he responds, "Uhh, mission control is not here right now, but can I take a message? ...Well, uhh, this is awkward, but the government is shut down. It turns out, I'm the only essential employee in the place."

"If you could give us coordinates for the International Space Station, we may have a small chance for survival,” asks McKinnon, reports RawStory.com.

“Hold on, lemme get a pen here. I’m gonna say that ‘Janet from Space called,’ and I’m gonna say ‘this is very important,'" says Thompson.

"We need a plan of action here," begs McKinnon.

"In Willie Wonka, Charlie and grandpa use a series of small burps to get down," advises Thompson.

Moments later, another janitor enters mission control to offer her advice, which is all the space TV shows that her son watches.
