A 7-year-old Kansas boy died Saturday night after accidentally shooting himself with his father’s gun.

Gavin Brummett, 7, was playing with a handgun while his father and brother were shooting on their rural property near Salina, Kansas. According to Salina County Sherriff’s officials, Gavin’s father Rodney heard two shots fire, and then found Gavin had accidentally shot himself.

Gavin was rushed to Salina Regional Health Center right after the shooting, and then was airlifted to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Police officials are urging parents to practice extremely caution with their firearms when kids are around, given that they are naturally curious and do not realize the repercussions of pulling the trigger of a loaded gun.

“Just the basic firearm safety,” Rick Heinrich of the Saline County Sheriff’s Office said. “Where the parents are with the child and supervising very closely watching what they do and working with them and having that close parental supervision right there with them.”
