Texas Granny Sharon Simmons Wants to be Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader

| by

Sharon Simmons may be a granny, but she's not quite ready to settle down to a life of 20-dollar birthday checks and hard candy. Simmons wants to take the field in Jerry Jones' extravagant, new stadium as an iconic Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader.

Simmons, a grandmother of two, will turn 56 in May. Not exactly the typical profile for an NFL tail wagger. If she makes the team she will be the oldest NFL cheerleader in history, blowing her closest competition out of the water by almost 9 years. The previous record holder was Laura Vikmanis of the Cincinnati Ben-Gals, who was an ancient 47.

The geriatric acrobat describes herself as an author and fitness fanatic and insists that she isn't intimidated by her much younger competition. "On stage I blend right in with women in their 20s and 30s," Sharon told CBS Dallas. "I always wanted to try out. I got real close in my early 20s, but got busy raising my daughter. And I thought, why not now?"

Why not now, Sharon? If you've got the moves, get after it.

Tryouts begin on May 5th.
