Two new images from  J.J. Abrams’ long-awaited Star Trek Into Darkness, the sequel to 2009’s blockbuster reboot, Star Trek.

Last week we saw an impressive teaser trailer and poster. The full-length trailer is expected next week after the big Hobbit weekend.  (If you see The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey in IMAX, you ‘ll actually get 9 minutes of the film.) Today we two new images that include both Benedict Cumberbatch and Alice Eve, actors whose characters have been shrouded in secrecy. Amid the speculation that this film is in some way connected with The Wrath of Khan or the original series episode “Space Seed” (which the teaser only served to fuel), it has been revealed that Eve will reportedly be playing Carol Marcus. In The Wrath of Khan, Marcus was the scientist who developed the terra-forming Genesis Project.

Cumberbatch on the other hand is still a bit of a mystery. In the pic above, he is listed as “John Harrison”, the name of a crew member with some connection to both “Space Seed” and The Wrath of Khan but there is speculation that that’s merely a cover.  Dun dun dun…

“When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis.

With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction.

As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew”

Along with Cumberbatch and Eve, Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, Zoe Saldana, John Cho, Anton Yelchin and Noel Clarke head a very talented cast. The script is by the terrific team of Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman (Star Trek,Cowboys & Aliens) and Damon Lindelof (Prometheus).

Star Trek Into Darkness will be arriving in regular and IMAX theatres in the US and UK on May 17.
