“Snow White and the Huntsman” (Universal Pictures)
It seems like everywhere you turn these days there is another movie about “Snow White.” Maybe that’s because it was only a few months ago we got the story of Snow White in the film “Mirror, Mirror.” Now along comes “Snow White and the Huntsman,” another take on the fairy tale. This one is a little darker, a little more dramatic. But is it a better movie? – not really.
In this film Kristen Stewart of “Twilight’ fame plays the beautiful heroine. Charlize Theron is the evil queen who wants her dead, Chris Hemsworth is the huntsman sent into the forest to find her and rip out her heart. We even get a handsome prince (Sam Claflin) and eight dwarfs.
The problem with the movie is that there are several different types of moviemaking going on at one time. Theron is portraying Queen Ravenna with all the gusto and energy she gave to her role in “Monster.” I mean does she actually think she will get an Oscar nod for this performance. C’mon, it’s “Snow White”!

Then we have Hemsworth portraying the Huntsman like he is a cousin of Thor. He is all macho muscle and avenging angel in one. He even has a back story as a drunken widower which brings in a sympathy angle for the poor guy.
And Kristen Stewart, she wants to play Snow White as Snow d’Arc. She can lead an army into battle while making a suit of armor look fashionable. She does all these battle things like a pro even though she has been locked up in a tower all of her life and never had one bit of training. Hey! It’s a movie.
Kristen also knows how to be smudgy and dirty in one instance and fresh faced and clean in the next. However to show she is a girl of the people she still has some of the dirtiest finger nails you will ever see. And as for beauty, well she is spunky. When Ravenna asks the mirror who is the fairest of them all and it responds Snow White you want to call that metallic blob a liar. Stewart prettier than Theron? – not in this lifetime!
The film gives all the nods to the legendary story. There is a poisoned apple that induces a coma; there is a handsome prince in the picture. There are even seven dwarves, even though one of the eight has to die to get the number down to seven. All of the requisite elements are on view but it still makes for a sloppy movie.

The film is rated PG-13 for profanity and violence.
Since this is a fairy tale maybe Stewart will become the next action hero. Maybe Theron will get her Oscar nod. And maybe Hemsworth will get to be best man at his brother’s marriage to Miley Cyrus. Who knows, but in the case of this movie who cares?
I scored “Snow White and the Huntsman” a happily ever after 5 out of 10.
