“Marvel’s The Avengers” (Walt Disney Studios)
“Marvel’s The Avengers” is a movie that gathers together Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), the Incredible Hulk (Mark Ruffalo.), the Black Widow (Scarlet Johansson), Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) and Captain America (Chris Evans). They are called together by Nick Fury (Samuel L Jackson) to protect the world from the evil actions of Thor’s adopted brother Loki (Tom Hiddleston).
Joss Whedon of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” fame co-wrote and directed this all star extravaganza. He managed to keep the action flowing in this fanboy fantasy flick while at the same time heaping the script with hilarious one liners. You will be gasping for breath not only form the mind blowing special effects but also from the laugh out loud humor emanating from this motley crew.
The amazing thing about the story is it gives each and every one of the characters his/her chance to be the center of attention. And when they do battle against Loki and his army of aliens they all have each other’s backs. They might be involved in different parts of the mission but they are all intrinsically cemented in the battle and won’t leave until it’s over.

Among the actors and their characters, Robert Downey, Jr.’s Iron Man never falls out of character and never fails to deliver the punchline to several of the funniest jokes. He is the one you look forward to seeing each and every time he shows up. He even manages to make his couple of scenes with Gwyneth Paltrow as his assistant/girlfriend Pepper Potts entertaining, and that is saying a lot.
There is a lot of talent on view in Chris Evans’ portrayal of Captain America. Evans makes this straight arrow hero admirable by his beliefs in God and country. He delivers his noble thoughts with energy and conviction. Captain America could have been the blandest hero in “The Avengers” but Evans makes him human and humble, and one of the most likeable characters in the story.
Scarlett Johansson scores some good screen time as the only female member of the troop. She downplays the Black Widows’ sexuality which makes her all the more alluring. Her chemistry with Hawkeye is palpable and creates an intriguing minor scenario for the film.
Hemsworth, Ruffalo and Jackson all have their moments in the movie. Do not think their characters are overlooked. They are assisted by a supporting performance of merit by Clark Gregg who plays Agent Phil Coulson. Coulson is the glue on which a story of this type is dependent. He provides consistency and believability.

The film is rated PG-13 for mild violence. In this case the movie could very easily have been rated PG. There is violence but it is so over top that it shouldn’t scare those ten years old and above.
“Marvel’s The Avengers” kicks off the summer movie season and it is the perfect movie to do this. It delivers on all the upfront hype and brings audiences a thoroughly enjoyable movie experience. This is the start of a movie franchise that should delight for years to come. I can hardly wait for the next installment.
