Michael Douglas Starring as Liberace in HBO's 'Behind the Candelabra'

Here’s your first look at Matt Damon and Michael Douglas as they film 'Behind the Candelabra' for Steven Soderbergh and HBO.

Douglas plays famed pianist and showman, Liberace, and Damon plays his lover (and extortionist) Scott Thorson, who was 39 years younger. The flick has a screenplay by Richard LaGravanese (Living Out Loud, Freedom Writers, PS I Love You) and is headed for the cable network sometime in 2013. (If I had to guess I’d say May sweeps.)  In the pics. Which are from a “car shopping scene set in the 1970s”, the big hair and fashions of the time are clearly visible. According to THR, the shoot will also take them to Las Vegas and Palm Springs.

“Liberace and Thorson first met in 1976 when the pianist was 56 and Thorson was just 17. Liberace soon hired him as a companion, assistant and driver. Despite Liberace's public denials about his homosexuality, the two became lovers — but things ended badly when Thorson filed a $113 million palimony lawsuit in 1982. The two reconciled before Liberace's death from AIDS-related complications in 1987.”

Also in the cast, Rob Lowe, Dan Ackroyd, Scott Bakula, Debbie Reynolds, Cheyenne Jackson and Nicky Katt.
