| by Michael Allen

In Hysteria, Hugh Dancy and Jonathan Pryce play two doctors in Victorian-era London treating cases of hysteria, a condition that was characterized at the time by a woman's irritability, anger or unexplained tears. Hugh Dancy and his best friend, portrayed by Rupert Everett, experiment with a new electrical device, a vibrator, to treat the ailment (video below).

Maggie Gyllenhaal plays the daughter of Jonathan Pryce who bares witness to this wonderful invention, which enthralls women, but scares men. The historical comedy has gathered buzz at the Toronto Film Festival.

Gyllenhaal has appeared in a number of films including: Sherrybaby, for which she was nominated for a Golden Globe, The Secretary and The Dark Knight. She also starred in the 2009 drama Crazy Heart with Jeff Bridges, in which she was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. She recently had a co-starring role in Nanny McPhee Returns.
