Katie Couric Distressed Over 911 Calls Made by Deceased Husband's Landline

| by

Katie Couric is left tired and confused after learning that a phone line listed in her deceased husband’s name has been making 911 calls every Tuesday morning.

The calls have been placed at 2 a.m. on Tuesdays and have sent police to her apartment in Manhattan. There have been a total of 10 calls so far.

She contacted New York Police Commissioner Ray Kelly for help, who is now looking into the calls to determine if it is the work of a prankster.

She told her audience at a taping of her show on Tuesday, looking notably tired and distressed.

The phone making the calls is for her Upper East Side apartment in New York which is under the name of her Jay Monahan, who passed away from colon cancer in 1998.

Couric never changed the phone to her name after he died.

The calls even happen when Couric is away.

“It’s happened like three times the last three weeks,” she said. “Every day, every time at 2 a.m. on Tuesday morning. I was out of town the last time it happened and apparently it happened before when nobody was home.”

Couric suspects they are “SWAT” calls, similar to the ones made for Ashton Kutcher and Tom Cruise’s homes.

“I get no sleep, so I am just oversharing,” she said.

Once she learned of the calls, staff in her building told her she should contact police. That was when she decided to call Ray Kelly.

“That is one of the perks of being well-known, that you can get through to Ray Kelly,” Couric said.

Authorities are now trying to decide if there is a fault with the phone or if the phone calls were a prank.

A friend of Couric’s said she is worried that police might not respond to a real emergency due to these repeated false alarms.

She was married to Monahan from 1989 until he died. Since then, she has worked to raise awareness for colon cancer and even had a colonoscopy on air in 2000.

She has dated Brooks Perlin and is now linked with John Molner.

Couric lives with her daughters, ages 21 and 17.
