Jason Russell of "Kony" Fame Detained: Vandalism, Public Masturbation

| by

"Kony 2012," the internet's latest viral meme, took a turn for the strange when Jason Russell, 33, was detained by police on suspicion that he was vandalizing cars and masturbating in public.

Russell is the co-founder of Invisible Children, a group behind the "Kony" video currently making the digital media rounds. Russell's video sheds light on the atrocities committed by Ugandan warlord Joseph Kony and his terrorist group, the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA). The "Kony 2012" video has been viewed over 100 million times thanks, in part, to widespread support from celebrities with active Twitter feeds.

But who can focus on African human rights abuses when there's public masturbation to discuss?

San Diego Police Lieutenant Andrea Brown arrested Russell after witnesses reported a man publicly masturbating and acting strangely (seems redundant). When the cops rolled up they took Russell in for allegedly vandalizing cars. Police suspect he was under the influence.

Not surprisingly, Russell denies any wrongdoing.

He described himself as a Christian and a father of two in a recent interview with MSNBC's Lawrence O'Donnell, and said he would like to have as many as nine more children with his wife.

Ben Keesey, CEO of Invisible Children released a statement on the incident, saying:

"Jason Russell was unfortunately hospitalized yesterday suffering from exhaustion, dehydration, and malnutrition. He is now receiving medical care and is focused on getting better. The past two weeks have taken a severe emotional toll on all of us, Jason especially, and that toll manifested itself in an unfortunate incident yesterday. Jason's passion and his work have done so much to help so many, and we are devastated to see him dealing with this personal health issue. We will always love and support Jason, and we ask that you give his entire family privacy during this difficult time."
