After becoming the first Indian-American to win the Miss America pageant with her victory on Sunday night, Nina Davuluri had to deal with the issue of race almost immediately. Following her win, users took to Twitter to complain about the Syracuse native’s victory.

“And the Arab wins Miss America. Classic,” one user wrote.

“How the f**k does a foreigner win miss America? She is a Arab! #idiots,” posted another.

“9/11 was 4 days ago and she gets miss America,” a third user tweeted.

During a press conference after her victory, Davuluri offered her response. “I have to rise above that,” she said. “I always viewed myself as first and foremost American. I’m so happy this organization has embraced diversity. I’m thankful there are children watching at home who can finally relate to a new Miss America.” Her platform was actually founded on “celebrating diversity through cultural competency.”

Davuluri, the second consecutive Miss New York to win the Miss America crown, has plans to be a doctor and is applying to medical school. The $50,000 scholarship she won as part of the pageant title will certainly help with that, The Inquisitr reported.

The first runner-up in the contest was Miss California, Crystal Lee.
