Despite rumors of millions of dollars in overnight income from a sex tape, many celebrities make barely enough to cover the bills (granted, their bills are probably a bit higher than most of ours).
According to Fox News, Teen Mom star Farrah Abraham never actually received the million-dollar figure reported by TMZ for her “intimate” video, but rather was paid just $10,000 by her distributor.
One source said, “In reality, she got $10,000 upfront and 30 percent of sales, minus the cost of production. The entire celebrity sex video genre is a lot of unsubstantiated marketing with very little truth behind it…. It’s all publicity. It’s all hype.”
Although Abraham wouldn’t comment to Fox about her earnings, TMZ is not the only source that may be overestimating her profit margin. The website Celebrity Networth reported that Abraham makes $60,000 per month in royalties from her sex tape, and that she received a whopping $1.5 million upfront.
It’s unclear where these sources get their information from, but inflating the numbers certainly boosts a celebrity’ status, and could lead to curiosity driven sales.
In an interview with Fox, sex-tape-broker Kevin Blatt reported that former Pippi Longstocking actress Tami Erin made the same amount as Abraham.
Said Blatt, “Tami Erin was offered $10K up front which is standard for Vivid. It is what they offer every celebrity, not a million dollars.”
Actress and star-dater Jasmine Waltz complained to Fox about her own deal with Vivid, saying, “Vivid told me they would give $125,000 and 25 percent of the back end, all the sales that are made. Basically, you’ll never see the back end after advertisement. You won’t get the money. It’s a very untrustworthy business.” Untrustworthy? Shocking.
Despite the unexpectedly low profit margin for certain celebs, there is no doubt that sex tapes have done wonders for the careers of some. Kim Kardashian and Paris Hilton may be more famous for their raunchy camera time than anything else — which may be why some stars are willing to bare all despite the relatively small paycheck.
