George Lopez: I Was Fired Because I'm Brown

George Lopez, whose TV talk show Lopez Tonight was recently canceled by TBS, joked last night on his show that he was fired because he was brown. But then the comic added that he had been cast in a Smurfs movie because he was blue: “So today I lost some work because I’m brown, but I got some work because I’m blue!”

It's difficult to tell if Lopez is 100 percent kidding -- or actually masking his racial claim with humor.

"In case you haven't heard the news, TBS has decided not to renew Lopez Tonight and tomorrow will be our last night," Lopez told his studio audience. "The unemployment rate is high, and for Latinos, it just got a little higher!"

Lopez added that he was going to follow Charlie Sheen's example, who was fired from Two and a Half Men. "I'm going to buy some crack. I'm going to get on the pipe! Lose that unwanted 110 pounds I wanted to lose. But I'm taking it good, I'm straight, believe me. I'm fine -- my goddesses are a wreck ... they left me!"

On a more serious note, Lopez told People magazine how grateful he was to Sandra Bullock for his success: "If it wasn't for her involvement in me, or her belief in me, I would have had a very different last 10 yearrs. She invested in me, and she wouldn't take no for an answer. And with that, and just who she is, she has my undying love, and my undying loyalty. Every day I thank her for believing in me."

Ratings for Lopez Tonight dropped after TBS moved the show from 11 p.m. to midnight to make room for Conan O'Brien last year. O'Brien acknowledged Lopez's sacrifice on Conan Wednesday night, "Had it not been for George being so incredibly supportive of me, I would not have come to TBS and we would not be doing this show right now."
