Fifty Shades of Grey Movie: Charlie Hunnam to Quit Due to Fan Backlash?

After all of the hype preceding the final casting decisions for the film rendition of “Fifty Shades of Grey,” the movie’s crew finally settled on their Christian Grey: Charlie Hunnam. Or so we thought. Rumors are flying around that Hunnam may be quitting the film already.

Apparently, following the Labor Day announcement of the movie’s cast, over 70,000 people signed a petition to replace Hunnam, who starred in “Sons of Anarchy,” with “White Collar’s” Matt Bomer, who had also been a favorite for the role while casting decisions were still being made.

And whereas E.L. James did mention that fans of her novel series would most likely be disappointed with the pick for Christian Grey in the film adaptation, one thing remained consistent: James and the movie crew were most concerned with the on-screen chemistry between Grey and the female lead, Anastasia Steele.

In that regard, casting directors hit the nail on the head; Hunnam reportedly has great chemistry with Dakota Johnson, who was chosen to play Steele. “There's just a tangible chemistry between us," Hunnam says. "It felt exciting and fun and weird and compelling.”

We’ll have to just see if Hunnam hangs on: “Fifty Shades of Grey” is due to be released in theaters on August 1, 2014.
