Conservatives Attack Michelle Obama for 'Crashing' Oscars, but Not Laura Bush (Video)
Michelle Obama’s Sunday night video appearance at the Academy Awards has ignited a fury of attacks from conservatives and the media, reports MediaMatters.org.
On Sunday, Obama made a surprise appearance via satellite at the 85th Academy Awards where she helped announce the Best Picture Oscar winner.
The conservative website DrudgeReport.com screamed the headline, "Obama Crashes Oscars."
Washington Post political blogger Jennifer Rubin claimed the First Lady felt entitled to "intrude" on the Oscars:
It is not enough that President Obama pops up at every sporting event in the nation. Now the first lady feels entitled, with military personnel as props, to intrude on other forms of entertaining (this time for the benefit of the Hollywood glitterati who so lavishly paid for her husband's election). I'm sure the left will holler that once again conservatives are being grouchy and have it in for the Obamas. Seriously, if they really had their president's interests at heart, they'd steer away from encouraging these celebrity appearances. It makes both the president and the first lady seem small and grasping. In this case, it was just downright weird.
It is worth noting: First Lady Laura Bush appeared at the 2002 Academy Awards in the "What Do the Movies Mean to You?" opening segment produced by director Errol Morris (video below).
In 1981, President Reagan taped an appearance for the Oscars which, as noted by the New York Times, stated: "He will not be the first President to make such an address. Franklin D. Roosevelt spoke to an Oscar audience by radio in 1941."
“An editor at Salon.com thinks the first lady is following in Fonzie’s footsteps by presenting the award for best picture at the Oscars,” CNN host Carol Costello said on Monday (video below). “Some say maybe the Oscars aren’t the best use of the first lady’s time. Instead of all those cameos, she might champion some grittier political issues like the deficit, gun control or the pressing need for bipartisanship … Did Michelle Obama jump the shark at the Oscars?”
Conservative pundits, like radio host Dana Loesch and columnist Michelle Malkin, rushed to defend Oscar appearances by Laura Bush and Ronald Reagan.
“Reagan was former president of the Screen Actors Guild. Sorry, did I miss Michelle Obama’s past career in Hollywood?,” Malkin wrote on Twitter Sunday night, adding that the First Lady would soon “be in every movie theater preview telling you to shut your cellphone off & put away the popcorn.”
“The left can’t produce a video of Laura Bush presenting because it doesn’t EXIST,” Loesch claimed. “They want to deflect because FLOTUS presenting shows bias and the propaganda involved around their ‘Zero Dark Thirty’ flick.”
Here is the video that Loesch claims doesn't exist. Laura Bush appears at the 2:14 mark.
