Chelsea Handler or Stephen Colbert to Replace David Letterman?

| by Emily Smith

Chelsea Handler and Stephen Colbert will likely be the top contenders to replace David Letterman after he retires at the year’s end.

Handler announced on Sunday her dissatisfaction with E! and that she would quit the network when her contract expired in nine months. Coincidentally, David Letterman announced his retirement on Thursday.

If Handler were to take over the Late Show, she would be the first woman since Joan Rivers to have her own network late night show.

Others, like Deadline Hollywood head Nikki Finke, speculate that CBS is more interested in Colbert.

“My sources say Stephen Colbert is the only one on the air currently that CBS is considering,” Finke tweeted.

Colbert currently has his own show on the Comedy Central, which in September won an Emmy for outstanding variety series and put an end to The Daily Show’s 10-year winning streak.
