American Apparel Uses Upskirt Pictures to Sell Women's Clothing

| by Michael Allen

American Apparel has unapologetically pushed the envelope in its ads, but this time may have gone too far (again).

The trendy clothing company recently uploaded two upskirt pictures of a young woman on its U.K. Instagram page. The pictures were taken down, but not before Twitter user Emilie Lawrence made screenshots and posted the pics on Twitter last night.

“The way in which American Apparel objectify and sexualize female bodies is damaging and rooted in patriarchal notions about a woman’s worth," Lawrence told i100.independent.co.uk.

“Adverts like this reduce women down to little more than body parts to be claimed, and reinforce idea that our primary purpose is to be appealing to men,” added Lawrence.

American Apparel also launched a new sexy “School Days” campaign in the U.K. that shows young women posing in school scenes. According to Salon.com, two of the clothing items are the “Lolita skirt” and “Lolita top."
