Alec Baldwin Quits Emmys After Fox Cuts Phone-Hacking Joke

The caustic and cutting Alec Baldwin has dropped out of tonight’s Emmy broadcast after a joke that he made about phone-hacking and News Corp CEO Rupert Murdoch was edited out of a pre-recorded piece for the show.

On Thursday, Baldwin crowed about his bit on Twitter and the possibility of censorship: “I did a short Emmy pretape a few days ago. Now they tell me NewsCorp may cut the funniest line.”

Meanwhile, Fox says the decision to cut the joke was made at the Fox level, not by anyone at the parent company News Corp. The network claimed that the joke was in poor taste and made fun of the serious allegations surrounding the phone-hacking scandal.

When the joke was edited out, Baldwin said that he no longer wanted his segment to be part of the broadcast. Fox has reportedly re-shot the clip with Leonard Nimoy.

Today, Baldwin stated on Twitter: “Fox did kill my NewsCorp hacking joke. Which sucks bc (sic) I think it would have made them look better. A little.”
