Actor Edward Norton Named UN Ambassador for Biodiversity

| by

Actor Edward Norton, who has starred in films including “The Incredible Hulk,” “Fight Club,” and “Kingdom of Heaven,” has a new role – United Nations Ambassador for Biodiversity.

If you are anything like me – you are probably asking yourself – “What does that mean?”

It means that Norton has long been involved in issues related to environmental conservation and creating a greener world. Last year, he ran the New York Marathon to raise $300,000 for the Maasai Wilderness Conservation Trust.

He has also recently launched a website, CrowdRise.com, urging young people to volunteer for eco causes.

Upon being appointed, Norton stated,

“I think that ambassadors in many ways can play a role in highlighting the models of success that the U.N. is promoting around the world.”

The United Nations has designated 2010 as the International Year of Biodiversity, with heads of State set to discuss the issue at the General Assembly in September.

Norton said a key challenge of his new role would be making people more aware that human wellbeing is fundamentally intertwined with biological diversity.
