Donald Trump's Birth Certificate Challenge to Obama Backfires

Donald Trump is considering a run for the White House, and we've already gotten an early look at his possible strategy -- on Monday he challenged President Obama to produce his birth certificate. To prove how easy it is to do, Trump released his own birth certificate. But the ploy backfired -- Trump's certificate was not the real deal.

Appearing on Fox News' morning show, Trump said, "It took me one hour to get my birth certificate. It’s inconceivable that, after four years of questioning,  the president still hasn’t produced his birth certificate. I’m just asking President Obama to show the public his birth certificate. Why’s he making an issue out of this?"

Trump then released that certificate to the conservative web site Newsmax.

However, The Smoking Gun pointed out that this is not an official New York State birth certificate; rather, it was one provided by Jamaica Hospital where Trump was born.

So Trump has fallen into the same trap that the birthers have placed Obama, who released a document during the 2008 campaign that proves he was born in Hawaii, but birthers say is not an official birth certificate.

For the record, Trump said he does not consider himself a birther -- he just wants to see the birth certificate so he could "know the truth."

Perhaps now people will be saying the same thing about Trump.
