Disney star Demi Lovato’s father has spoken out about his daughter entering rehab.
The 18-year-old announced yesterday she was checking into rehab for “emotional and physical issues”.
Lovato is alleged to have got in a scuffle with a backing dancer at the airport in Peru on Saturday, where she had been touring with the Jonas Brothers.
The scuffle is believed to have been the catalyst for Lovato to seek help.
“Demi has decided to take personal responsibility for her actions and seek help,” the representative told E! News.
“Demi and her family ask that the media please respect their privacy during this difficult time. She regrets not being able to finish her tour, but is looking forward to getting back to work in the near future.”
Disney, meanwhile, has released a statement standing behind Lovato, saying, “We support Demi’s decision to put her health first and we send her our best wishes.”
Her father, Patrick Lovato, is now blaming the pressures of Hollywood for her problems.
“There are a lot of pressures,” he told US website RadarOnline. “That is one of the things I worried about when she signed with Disney. It’s just going to happen.”
Patrick admits that he hasn’t spoken to his daughter in a while.
“It’s been a couple of months,” he admitted. “I’ve had cancer, I’ve been in the hospital for two months and I just got out. She hasn’t visited, she’s been too busy, she’s been way too busy.”
As for reports that the Disney star has a cutting issue, he says, “I can’t say.”
He adds that “She’ll be fine. She’s strong alright.”
