Defining Exactly What The Word "Atheist" Means

Words mean what I use them to mean. Dictionary definitions merely report how most people use words. They may not always report how I use them or how small groups of people use them. So any word can mean anything I use it to mean. The problem is that using words in some private sense that is unfamiliar to others will result in miscommunication. Because there is a shared understanding of how English people use words we must use them in the standard ways if we want to be understood. The word “nice” previously meant “stupid” and the word “gay” previously meant “happy,” but now they mean something different. That’s because how we use words evolves down through the centuries. There is Old- Middle- and Modern English, which was derived in part from German and even Greek forbearers. There is American, Britain, and Australian English.

Now let’s think about the word “atheism” in this light. I am an atheist. What do I mean when I use this word? I mean that I do not think there are any supernatural beings or supernatural forces. It’s not that I have no beliefs about them. I do. I believe they do not exist. People who do not have any beliefs about such beings are people who have never considered them in the first place.

By using this word in that way the ONLY question left unresolved is whether I am effectively communicating to others. The problem is that there is no agreed upon definition of this word by atheists themselves. One of the problems is that atheism is a negative word. Etymologically speaking an atheist is a non-theist (a=non theist). Christians themselves were called atheists in the Roman days because they did not believe in the Roman pantheon. But if I were to say that some object is not a door I have not told you what that object is, only what it is not. The problem is further compounded by Christians themselves who wish to define the word for us as meaning “metaphysical naturalists,” which may not adequately describe all of us in the future.

Skeptics have proposed other words to positively describe themselves as “Brights” or “Secular Humanists.” There are agnostic atheists, spiritual atheists, and Christian atheists. There is both a positive and negative atheism. Buddhism may be described as an atheistic philosophy.

For Christians listening in on these discussions let me say for the record that I consider them to be little more than Wittgensteinian language games, which will probably be solved in the future as more and more atheists adopt the same language to describe the same thing, which, when the dust settles will indeed communicate who we are and what we share (if there is a "we" to be found). [Keep in mind that Christians have the same problem with the word “Christian.” Is everyone a Christian who describes himself as one? I repeatedly hear that some group or person is/was not a “true Christian.”] I suspect that if most everyone in the world became atheists there wouldn't even be a word to describe us. We would probably be described as human beings, or members of the same golf club, or of another type grouping.

In any case, Dr. John Shook recently attempted to define it. See what you think.

If an atheist is someone that doesn't believe in God, what is God? What is it that they don't believe in?

Check out the thread. During my ramblings we get into this.

I've seen most scholarly philosophers simplify the differences between theism and atheism by first defining the literal meaning of each.

As was already stated here, theism refers to the belief in a god . Atheism refers to the lack of belief in a god.

The word agnostic is actually often incorrectly used (at least when it comes to prominent philosophers). Agnosticism refers to the doubt one has in a subject due to lack of tangible knowledge of said subject. This is in contrast to both theism and atheism, which are terms that have to do with whether one has belief or does not have belief--there is no concept of "knowledge" involved with these terms. Therefore, agnostic/gnostic are more correctly used as a modifier to either theism or atheism. The term "gnostic" is opposite to agnostic because it means that the person truly accepts a subject, regardless of the current knowledge/evidence of said subject.

Typically, the field is broken down into the following four (a simplified view):

1. gnostic atheist - one who believes undoubtedly that a god does not exist, regardless of inability to prove god does not exist

2. agnostic atheist - one who lacks belief in god, but admits the non-existence of a god is currently unprovable

3. agnostic theist - one who believes in a god, but admits the existence of a god is currently unprovable

4. gnostic theist - one who believes undoubtedly that there is a god, regardless of the inability to prove god does exist

And then of course atheism itself can also be broken down into "strong" and "weak atheism". Most atheists , however, are agnostic atheists.

It seems to me that the "gnostic atheist" term is what most people think of when they hear the word "atheist", hence the bitterness correlated with the term.

That is exactly what I was trying to say in the above comment thread! Thank you!

Only thing is there is one more person in the middle there. The person who says they don't know what is out there at all. This person often just doesn't care about the subject or feels it doesn't really matter either way.

Where has agnostic been lost to?

Agnonstic-not saying if there is or isn't a god because their is no proof.
Atheist(non-theist)-Belief that there is no god
Theist-Belief that there is a god.

Quick funny. Everyone is atheist EXPECIALLY people who believe in a god. Because they believe theirs is the only true god/s therefore they are atheist to different goods such as Zeus or Apotamikin.

Any atheist who says that they 100% know for certain there is no God is a jerk. No one can ever say they know something doesn't exist. It's impossible to prove or know that something doesn't exist at all.

I believe that agnostic is a term for either:
a) an atheist who is to afraid to come out and say they are atheist so they find a less offensive (but more confusing) term.

b) believe that any belief at all is just as valid as any other belief, ie sasquach, aliens, God, pixies, tarot, astrology, or any other woo that makes them feel good.

An atheist is allowed to say that they are uncertain. That doesn't make them automatically an Agnostic. Most atheists would say that if evidence for God arrived today, they would believe in God. He'd have a lot of explaining to do and probably wouldn't be deserving of worship... but they'd believe he existed.

At least I'll agree with you in that, as an Atheist who doesn't know what people are talking about when they talk about God, if verifiable evidence arrived ... but

I don't expect that to happen.

ttut21's picture

Ok... I see your point, but it remains that IS the definition of agnostic right?
I find nothing wrong with sombody saying, "I Don't Know". You can *Believe* that there is or isn't a god and loose or gain faith in a god.

Well I'm an Atheist and I would say that I'm about 99% sure there is no God. And I'm pretty sure most Agnostics would agree. Or at least in the classic sense of a God (white beard and all that).

Honestly I think the main problem is hatred. You say Atheist in this country and most people hate you right off the bat. As a result people quite often choose the safer Agnostic position of "i don't know" rather than the atheist "I don't know, but there probably isn't".

People can call themselves whatever they want. If you are more comfortable with calling yourself Agnostic, be my guest. To me though, Agnostic means you either don't care, too afraid to call yourself an Atheist, or you believe in pretty much every bit of nonsense you come across and that whole "believe what you want to believe in, it's all the same thing" vague spiritual nonsense.
