Conserving the Environment
Conserving the environment is one of the single most important things that people can do in their day-to-day lives. Considering how easy it is to “go green” and the amount of little things that folks can do to inflict less damage on the environment, there is really no excuse for each and every single person on earth to not do their part.
One of the biggest things people take for granted is how much water they waste. By fixing a leaky toilet, turning off the faucet while brushing teeth and washing clothes in cold water whenever it’s appropriate, folks can save over 200 gallons of water per day. And it goes without saying, if one person can make that significant of a difference by doing those little things, imagine what groups of people on the same page can accomplish.
Transportation is another big factor in the effort to conserve the environment. It’s possible to reduce greenhouse emissions by an average of 1,590 pounds per day simply by staying off the road two days per week. By combining errands or utilizing an alternative form of transportation (bicycle, walking, etc.), people can improve both their financial standing and their health.
Recycling is so commonplace now that it’s almost easy to take it for granted. However, a surprising amount of people still refuse to acknowledge that reducing pollution is as easy as separating your cans and your paper. And to everyone who doesn’t think they can make a difference, keep this little fact in mind: if an office of 7,000 workers recycled all of their paper waste in a given year, that would amount to the equivalent of taking 400 cars off the streets.
Finally, little adjustments could be made around the house that can in turn make a huge difference in conserving the environment. Something like making the switch to compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) can increase the amount of time the lights last by 10 all the while using two-thirds less energy. Also, by cleaning air filters so that the system doesn’t overwork or turning down the thermostat setting, people can make a world of difference.
The options to conserve the environment are clearly available for anybody who is ready and willing to plunge. Obviously making little adjustments can be annoying at the beginning; however, given the magnitude of the cause, it’s hard to justify every single person not doing their part.
