Concealed Gun Permit Owners Kill 9 Cops, 108 People Since 2007
WASHINGTON --- Concealed handgun permit holders have killed at least nine law enforcement officers in addition to 108 private citizens (including 13 shooters who killed themselves after an attack) since May 2007 according to the latest update of Concealed Carry Killers, a Violence Policy Center (VPC) on-line resource that tallies news reports of such killings.
The web site, located at http://www.vpc.org/ccwkillers.htm, is updated monthly to include new fatal shootings since May 2007 by concealed handgun permit holders and any changes in the legal status of permit holders facing criminal charges. (Any concealed handgun permit holders who are eventually acquitted of their alleged crimes are not included in the tallies maintained on the site although the facts surrounding the shooting are detailed).
The VPC web site categorizes the 68 incidents, which occurred in 20 states, and offers detailed descriptions of each incident (some incidents may fit into multiple categories). Of these incidents, 13 were murder-suicides involving firearms and 11 were mass shootings (three or more victims) that claimed as many as 11 lives at a time. Law enforcement officers were killed in Alabama, Florida (two incidents), Idaho, Ohio, and Pennsylvania (two incidents). All of the law enforcement killings were committed with guns.
Private citizens were killed in Alabama, California, Colorado, Florida (12 incidents), Idaho (two incidents), Kentucky, Michigan (six incidents), Minnesota, New York, North Carolina (five incidents), Ohio (five incidents), Oklahoma (two incidents), Oregon, Pennsylvania (five incidents), South Carolina (two incidents), Tennessee (six incidents), Texas, Utah (four incidents), Virginia (four incidents), and Washington. All but one of the killings were committed with guns.
Violence Policy Center Legislative Director Kristen Rand states, “When the National Rifle Association launched its state-by-state campaign for lax concealed handgun laws, it made this promise: ‘People who get permits in states which have fair right-to-carry laws are law-abiding, upstanding community leaders who merely seek to exercise their right to self-defense.’ To the contrary, concealed handgun permit holders are killing people over parking spaces, football games, and family arguments.”
Because most state systems that allow the carrying of concealed handguns in public by private citizens release little data about crimes committed by permit holders, the VPC reviews and tallies concealed handgun permit holder killings as reported by news outlets. It is likely that the actual number of fatal criminal incidents involving concealed handgun permit holders is far higher.
The Violence Policy Center (www.vpc.org) is a national educational organization working to stop gun death and injury.

VPC is a propaganda website , and the facts are vague. The only truth is that those people (now criminals) had or have had a CCW in life. Life forces turned these people into criminals, just like all criminals, and having or not having a CCW permit didn’t make any difference in the outcome of their crime . Unfortunately, criminals will always find ways to get guns .
I forgot to mention, criminals are exempt from ever acquiring a CCW permit, because they already own and carry their handguns illegally.
Does that 108 private citizens number include bad guys killed in the act of home invasion, rape , and other such horrible crimes?
Also FSA, it's a little insulting that you think lawfully armed people like me are going to kill someone over a parking spot. We're not children .
Its amazing how numbers can be manipulated to say anything they want them to.
I decided the check the FSA's claim that acquittals are not included in the tally. They aren't, but there were only two, and most of the cases were "pending" and these were included.
Giving the VPC the full benefit of the doubt on all "confirmed" cases, there were:
81 killed which includes: 63 private citizens, 17 suicides, and 1 police officer.
The claim that 9 police officers were killed is left unsubstantiated, and the data lists only 1 police officer death (pending or confirmed) that I could find.
Furthermore, the VPC double counts suicides and police officer deaths by including both in the "private citizens count."
The site lists 117 total deaths despite there being only 110 listed in the data even when acquittals are included. Incidentally, if you triple count the unsubstantiated police number, you get 108 + 9 = 117.
The VPC also defines any shooting that results in 3 or more deaths, including the shooter, as a "mass shooting." The data includes 1 shooting with 11 deaths, 8 with 4 deaths, and 2 with 3 deaths.
I'm not going to be the one to set the cut-off for what is and isn't a "mass shooting," but if 3 deaths equals a "mass shooting," then the media must not have gotten the memo.
Using actual statistics from the FBI's Uniform Crime Report. In 2007, there were 16,929 murders in the United States. In 1/3 of the time, that is 156.75 more murders than were committed by concealed carry permit holders as reported by the VPC.
If we compare the most recent 3 years of CDC data to the 2.75 year period analyzed by the VPC, there were:
**all multiples rounded down
340x more firearm homicides (36,767)
160x more non-firearm homicides (17,287)
115x more drowning deaths (12,479)
1210x more motor-vehicle deaths (130,763)
About the Only Statistic I can find that is comparable is drowning homicides. At 148, there were 1.3x more drowning homicides than there were homicides perpetrated by concealed carry licensees. I guess we should ban swimming pools and drain all of our lakes.
since there is no Constitutional right to own a swimming pool.
What difference does it make whether it was concealed or not?
In my neck of the woods gun laws are pretty lax, if not the most lax of all the states. We can openly carry guns as long as they are visible, the permits do nothing but allow us to hide them. I kinda like the idea of open carry myself.
Since 2007, 100,000 private citizens and police officers have been killed by licensed drivers. According to polls conducted by the Brady Campaign, an estimated 70,000 of them were killed by antigun activists.
The day every antigun activist in America stops driving , to keep me safe , maybe I'll take them seriously. Until that time comes, I guess we'll just have to assume every last one of them are reckless, vehicular terrorists, criminals and murderers.
Non permit holders have killed 48,000 since 2007. So if you were trying to make a point, I'm afraid you missed completely. No surprise though, considering the source.
684,569. That's the number of license (not permit, there's a difference) holders within the State of Florida as of December 31st. Six-hundred eighty-four thousand, five-hundred sixty-nine. That's the number of law -abiding concealed carriers who've not committed crimes in but one of the many States which still allows the Second Amendment Right.
