Commemorative Titanic Voyage Set for 2012 -- Creepy or Cool?

Is this a fascinating historical recreation that commemorates one of the most enduring tragedies of the 20th century or a twisted and macabre exhibition that once again tempts fate?

The British-based Miles Morgan Travel is now taking reservations for a 2012 cruise that will mark the 100th anniversary of the RMS Titanic's ill-fated voyage of April 1912. Passengers will dine on the same menu as 100 years ago -- and the journey will follow the exact same travel itinerary (except for, uh, the ending).

The "voyage of a lifetime" will sail from Southampton on April 8, 2012. The 12-night cruise aboard the MS Balmoral will pass by Cherbourg on the French coast before calling into the Irish port of Cobh.

From there the ship will sail across the Atlantic, arriving at the Titanic disaster site on April 14-15 -- exactly 100 years after the Titanic hit an iceberg and sank. A memorial service will pay tribute to the passengers and crew who perished on that fateful night.

The voyage will then continue to Halifax, Nova Scotia, the final resting place of many who were on board, before sailing on to New York, the Titanic's ultimate planned destination.

Opposing Views asks: If given a chance, would you take this journey or is it being done in poor taste?

No worse than the billboards on I-40 Titanic Museum in Pigeon Forge Tennessee.
I found the movie a little too well made.
I would guess it is more tragic to Europeans so I'll leave it to them to say whether it is in poor taste

After finding Titanic, Mr Ballard lay a simple plaque astern (I believe) to honour the dead. Today, there are some 10+ decorating the forward part of Titanic's deck; most in gaudy fashion. And, now there is a sold out cruise that will retrace Titanic's path. I agree with those who find it "creepy" & I believe most visitors to this site do find it all in very bad taste............Perish the thought, but what an opportunity for Al Quidah (msplg) to lay plans of their own; a frightening thought at the very least.

I would take this cruise. Hardly get to enjoy the ocean anymore as a Submariner.

But it is a pretty crappy marketing gimmick. I can't wait for the Katrina Waterpark in New Orleans...

as a civil war re-enactment. Silly and trite, but it's not in "bad taste" in an offensive way.

What better way to honor those who could not complete the journey than by trying again. Is Miles Morgan Travel capitalizing on misfortune? Perhaps. Is this trip a good idea? I don't think it is a bad one, the chances for a repeat of history are infinitesimal.

The plural of 'anecdote' is not 'data'.

If capitalizing on the death of 1500 people is not in poor taste, what would it take for them to turn it sour?

Maybe they could reenact some scenes from the movie?

But, I'm hoping the ship sinks. Horrible sense of humor, I know.
That would be hilarious to me. I'm of course putting our coast guard right by them so we don't have the loss of life just the funny part.

This is to me like saying that going to your grandparents grave on memorial day is in bad taste.
