College Football Week 2 Predictions: Air Force, UCLA, BYU, Stanford

| by

Zach is off this week, but Jonathan is back to give you some of his picks for the second weekend of college football.

UCLA vs. Stanford OVER 52.5 Points
Quite frankly (Stephen A. Smith voice) both these teams have terrible defenses.  Stanford ranked 90th in total defense last season, and are switching to a 3-4 which they didn’t even show in the opener against Sacramento State. Instead the Cardinal played only a base 4-2-nickel all game in order to hide the new 3-4 scheme for this week. That means they have never actually played with the new alignment yet in live action.  UCLA got flattened on the ground by Kansas State allowing 313 yards. Not good news going up against Stanford’s physical offensive line that is probably the best in the Pac-10.

While UCLA couldn’t get its passing game going at all against Kansas State, there is talent with the skill players and the Bruins tend to play much better offensively at home. Expect both teams to put up plenty of points Saturday in the Rose Bowl via both the run and the pass.

Air Force -1 vs. BYU
BYU showed pretty well in Week 1, but against an overrated Washington squad. A big thing to me was that the Cougars gave up 128 yards to the Huskies on the ground despite Steve Sarkisian virtually abandoning the ground game in the second half and putting the game exclusively in the hands of Jake Locker. Chris Polk only got three carries in the 2nd half until the final drive. That decision proved to be a mistake and doomed Washington.  You know for sure that Air Force will stick to the run as it piled up 437 yards in Week 1 was the best rushing attack in the nation last year as well (474 yards per game).  These two teams are much closer to even in objective quality, and with Air Force having homefield I think there is some value with this pick.
