| by

With current featherweight champion Jose Aldo needing more time to recover from previous injuries. The man sitting in the #1 contender’s spot, Chad Mendes (10-0) doesn’t want to wait around and has decided to fight at UFC 133.

The UFC announced today the Mendes will put his title shot at risk and take on the tough Brazilian grappling Rani Yahya (16-6) on August 6th. Even though a contract hadn’t been received yet Mendes was expecting to fight on this card, but now electing to stay active could turn around to bite him later.

The undefeated Team Alpha Male fighter made his UFC debut in February, defeating Michihiro Omigawa by unanimous decision at UFC 126. Previously he had fought in the WEC where he fought four times in 2010, going 4-0 against Javier Vazquez, Cub Swanson, Anthony Morrison and Erik Koch.

The Brazilian, Yahya made his UFC debut two weeks before Mendes at UFC: Fight for the Troops 2. Moving back up to the featherweight division, Yahya defeated the former champion Mike Brown via unanimous decision. Yahya had been on a two fight losing streak prior to the upset and is 4-4 in his last eight fights overall.
