Sheryl Crow Told Authorities about Lance Armstrong's Doping, Claims New Book

Pop singer Sheryl Crow never publicly called out her former boyfriend and ex-Tour De France champion Lance Armstrong for doping, but according to a new book, she did tell the authorities.

The new book Wheelmen: Lance Armstrong, the Tour de France and the Greatest Sports Conspiracy Ever is written by Wall Street Journal reporters Reed Albergotti and Vanessa O'Connell.

According to the Wall Street Journal:

The book arose from more than 100 interviews with former teammates, federal investigators and anti-doping officials. Some of these figures spoke on background, asking not to be quoted so they could speak freely.

Wheelmen claims Armstrong's then-girlfriend Crow flew with him to Belgium and witnessed him getting an illegal blood transfusion in 2004, notes the New York Daily News.

An excerpt from Wheelmen states:

Rather than try to hide the transfusion from her, Armstrong was completely open about it. He trusted that Crow would have no desire to tell the press or anyone else about the team's doping program. He explained that it was simply part of the sport - that all cyclists were doing the same thing.

Crow and the disgraced cyclist broke up in 2006, but according to Wheelmen she kept his secret until 2011. That's when Crow was contacted by investigators as a grand jury was considering a federal indictment against Armstrong.

Wheelmen claims that Crow was offered protection from prosecution if she would talk about Armstrong and his doping. In an effort to save her own skin, Crow reportedly agreed.

The book says Crow told prosecutors everything she saw, but a few weeks later, the grand jury dropped the case against Armstrong without explanation.

While Armstrong escaped criminal charges, the Justice Department is suing Armstrong and his team under the False Claims Act to get back tens of millions of dollars that the U.S. Postal Service paid to Armstrong and his inner circle.
