Sometimes, we blur the lines between fictional characters and the actors who play them. So, we imagine that Julia Roberts spends her spare time being so goshdarn goofy that everyone falls in love with her, that Michael Fassbender just knobs his way through life and that Robert Downey Jr actually basically is Tony Stark, Iron Man. And we're basically totally right about all of these things, but mainly about Robert Downey Jr, as a classic RDJ mind-ramble has proven.
Speaking to Esquire, RDJ expressed his opinion that it was destiny that brought him to the role of Tony Stark, and that he would never, ever let that role go:
"I think Iron Man wound up being the first time I screen- tested since Chaplin.
"As far as I was concerned, it was destiny. Now, I can't tell you how many people are sitting around with the cold, hard evidence that it wasn't. I just wasn't going to let lack of perseverance, lack of preparation, or lack of prayer get in the way.

"I just went crazy - in a good way.
"Let's just say that the only thing I ever let go of had claw marks in it.
"There's a little bit of soul reclamation going on. I feel that the first time I played Tony, I did it best. Sorry! The affinity with Tony now is - how do you sustain something?"
Is it just us reading that, bizarrely, in the manner of drunk Jeff Goldblum? Oh, it is? Oh well...

Anyway, look, we usually can't stand it when actors go on about destiny and all that bollocks, but when it's RDJ talking about a role in a movie where he basically gets to play RDJ with a nuclear reactor for a heart, there's no other word for it than destiny.
Sure, Tony Stark might not be a former child prodigy, a former Academy Award nominee and a former drug addict, but he does look damn good in a tux.
You go on with your bad self, RDJ. you mad bastard. You just do you; it's the best thing you do.
