NRA Releases List of Celebrities, Organizations that Support Gun Control

article image

The National Rifle Association (NRA) recently released a list of gun control advocates.

According to the list, these people and companies have given money and/or support to gun control measures and/or organizations such as the Brady Act and the Clinton assault weapons ban, reports the Daily Mail.

According to the NRA, celebrities who believe in some sort of gun control in America (the most violent industrialized nation) include: Jack Nicholson, Sylvester Stallone, Dick Van Dyke, George Clooney and Lauren Bacall.

The NRA claims that these businesses support gun control in an effort to reduce deaths: National Spinal Cord Injury Association, the American Medical Association, Levi Strauss & Co., Hallmark Cards, Blue Cross Blue Shield insurance, Ben & Jerry`s and the American Association of Retired Persons.

The NRA also listed the Episcopal Church-Washington Office, Kansas City Royals baseball team, Gannet Publications, the New York Times and Motorcycle Cruiser Magazine.

DesElms calls conservatives

DesElms calls conservatives "anti-retiree". He prefers the liberals, who are bankrupting America. Somehow he thinks a Social Security system that incurs a $90 trillion obligation which the country cannot pay is good for retirees.

DesElms isn't stupid. He's insane. Only an insane person would think you could spend more than you earn forever with no consequences.

Then he mocks conservatives claiming they don't know history. He apparently is ignorant, either innocently or deliberately, that the Democrats founded the KKK and fought the Republicans for 100 years before finally caving in and supporting civil rights.

Now they claim to be the great supporters of the blacks, yet they have destroyed the black family and community and enslaved them in poverty and debt.

If you want to know what Democrats support and believe in, look at Detroit. That is America's future. A crime ridden, bombed out, broken down, poverty stricken country with less than half the jobs it used to have.

Liberals aren't stupid. They're criminally insane.

I'm SO glad I quit AARP last

I'm SO glad I quit AARP last year, because of their giving millions of dollars of free publicity to the Obamas in their magazine, and their paying for television ads favoring ObamaCare/"the Affordable Care Act". I use the insurance that AARP has endorsed and United Health Care sells, but month after month, when I pay my insurance premiums by telephone, I am asked to rejoin AARP and every time I refuse (United Health Care is obliged under the terms of their license not to discriminate against non-members of AARP). Now, it comes out that AARP is in the gun control racket with Obama and the Democratic Party, and when AARP asks me to join their racket this time, I'll add their support for gun control to the list of reasons they can go to Hell.

NRA's done us all a great service. The very least we can do for the people and firms on this list for trying to abolish our civil rights is to not give them the money which helps them do it. I decided last month never to watch another live broadcast from ABC, CBS, NBC, MSNBC, CNN and PBS as long as they slant their news stories to support the Democratic Party, gun control, Barack Obama and other liberal causes and politicians. It's clear what we must do - make it hard on the people who want to remove our civil rights, just as African-Americans boycotted the supporters of segregation and racism.

Thanks, Opposing Views, for printing this list!

@loupgarous, Yeah, I

@loupgarous,

Yeah, I remember when I was offered a free AARP membership, and so, what the heck, I signed-up; and then, later, I spotted, when I was Googling something, anti-AARP-on-account-of-its-politics comments; so, then I investigated to see what in the heck such commenters were talking about. What I found was that AARP did, indeed, seem to not share conservative viewpoints (but, then, again, neither did the majority of Americans this past November... of which your likes remain in denial); and the alternative to AARP that your likes seem to be recommending is these guys...

...and several others... all of them CONSERVATIVE; and all of them against such as President Obama's affordable health care legislation, as well as, most of them, in favor of privatizing Social Security... and all manner of other anti-retirees positions. That's how the Right plays. They create organizations which SAY they do things, like advocate for the elderly, but what they really do is help corporate America... just as the NRA now represents gun makers, and not gun owners; and just as degree/diploma mills create fake accreditor websites; and just as computer virus makers create fake/rogue computer anti-virus software that is actually a virus in and of itself. That's how such companies work... because they know there'll always be the gullible likes of you who'll bite.

No, seriously: Please go.

As for your whole, insensible, complete-lie-of-a "slanted" news media thing, and its tired, old "liberal bias" underpinnings: I just covered that with you in another post beneath another article. Please go read it (yeah... right... like THAT's gonna' happen).

As for your laughable whole straight-from-the-FOX-NEWS-CHANNEL-echo-chamber "just as African-Americans boycotted the supporters of segregation and racism" thing: Please give me a moment to stop laughing. It was YOUR likes whom they were boycotting, fortheloveofgod. Just go ahead and find a black person who was actually around back then (and who isn't either a misguided disciple of such as Herman Cain; or a clearly-doesn't-understand-history numbskull like Clarence Thomas, Tim Scott, or Michael Steele) who thinks their enemies, then, were liberals. Go ahead... find just one! I dare ya'.

DesElms: To a degree, I can see your point; but I have a question for you! If it's true what you say about the nasty Right (as you make them out to be); then what is the justification of a Left-leaning liberal newspaper doing printing a list on it's front page of all the people within that whole area that own guns (and even prints their addresses no less)and some of the people on that list work at the state penatentry in that area(and got a lot of flak from the inmate population as to what to expect when some of them are released from prison). We can call the one (the newspaper) free journalism; while we call the NRA every name under the sun except reasonable??? The one thing I am sick and tired of hearing is hoiw great the Demacrats are and how worthless the Republicans are!!! To me, the Demacrats are the most worthless, and the biggest liers that ever came about. Any more you really don't know who too believe because everyone has their own agenda rather then the agenda of the people who voted them into office!!!The Demacrats are no better then the Republicans; and the Republicans are no worse then the Demacrats!!!!!

Author Michael Allen makes the absurd claim that the US is "the most violent industrialized nation" - but a simple Google search finds that the number of violent crimes per capita is higher in the UK, Canada, France, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Finland, Belgium, Sweden, South Africa, and Austria, among others. The UK alone has a violent crime rate over 4 times higher than the US.

How has this guy been allowed to write for NBC News or HowStuffWorks, when he can't even check basic facts?

I'm not really sure what the

I'm not really sure what the NRA is trying to say or prove by printing a list of citizens who were willing to put their money "where their mouth is" and donate to causes they support. Isn't this what most Americans do? What has their occupation to do with anything? Is the NRA telling us that it cannot tell the difference from role-playing fantasies like movies or games and real weapons that can kill? I think it's obvious that these "entertainers" can. I don't think anyone who is serious about gun ownership in the US(from one side or the other) is influenced in anyway by celebrity opinions. Every American has the right to express their views or donate to anything they want.

If the NRA hopes that gun advocates will boycott their local YMCA or one of the religious organizations that support creating gun laws, then I can understand why they would print this list of organizations. No one should give money to an organization that donates it to caused they oppose. More people should be aware of where their money is going when they make a donation to a group. Since most gun owners are NOT EVEN MEMBERS OF THE NRA, clearly the Media should not be quoting the NRA as though they speak for anyone one but themselves. They represent far less Americans than the YMCA or other organizations they have listed here. But in my opinion the matter of legislating guns should be decided by the people in each State. We were not created to be a " ONE SIZE FITS ALL" nation. The people of each State know their needs, social customs & culture attitudes better than a centralized government. Let the States continue to create their own limits on fire arms if they want them, and then let the Supreme Court determine if any of those laws conflict with their interpretation of the 2nd Amendment.

fsilber's picture

We know the people on the list feel that way, and really, we're not trying to shame you. What we're trying to do is to educate ourselves as to which organizations not to support.

It's sort of like if the NAACP published a list of organizations that businesses and foundations that quietly contribute to the Ku Klux Klan.

DesElms's picture

It never ceases to amaze me

It never ceases to amaze me that which those on the Right think are shameful. By their clueless standards, one's presence on this list is something of which one should be ashamed. They simply cannot see that,

a) those on the list wear their presence there as a badge of honor; and,

b) everyone other than Right sees its touting of the list, and what it believe one's presence on it should means, as yet another indication of the Right's sheer, utter and unmitigated cluelessness...

...as one would have thought the Right would have learned -- and, yes, the hard way -- in the November general election. That it has not, for a long time, had its finger on the pulse of America is something which the Right just can't seem to get its collective mind wrapped around, much less accept.

And so the Right releases its list of supporters of gun control and just assumes that America will see it the way the Right sees it; and said Right completely misses that no one, other than it, shares its view.

It's kinda' hard to watch, actually.

The "Right" didn't publish the list, the NRA did. They fully understand your point "a)", and expect their membership to shun those entities because of it. They no more fully expect "America" will see it the way they do any more than any other group who publishes lists of those who disagree with them. They publish it so like thinkers will have a list of people who oppose their views, so they may take action. Just like any other list of this sort. Say abortion clinics and supporters (just for example).

There's too many to boycott

There's too many to boycott all of them always, but when I have a choice I try. For example, I declined to see "Meet the Fockers" and "Little Fockers" because Dustin Hoffman demanded that the NRA put him on their enemies list. I mean, that was more than just having an opinion or giving a contribution -- he _declared_ got in the NRA's face and declared himself to be our enemy. I mean, what kind of masochist patronizes someone who does _that_?

Savannah's picture

fsilber, Is this what you're

fsilber,

Is this what you're referring to with regard to Hoffman?

"'As a supporter of comprehensive gun safety measures, I was deeply disappointed when I discovered my name was not on the list,' Hoffman wrote in a letter to the NRA that was released Tuesday.

'I was particularly surprised by the omission given my opposition to the loophole that makes it legal for 18- to 20-year-olds to buy handguns at gun shows,' he added."

http://www.cnn.com/2003/ALLPOLITICS/10/29/offbeat.blacklist.reut/

I'm not sure what is objectionable about his request.

You called this list an "enemies list". I find it much more objectionable that the NRA compiled and published a list that seems to be designed to intimidate those who made the cut.

I'm not anti-gun, by the way. I don't want one in my home, but as long as someone is sane and has no history of violence, keeps it secured, etc, I am not opposed to handguns, rifles, shotguns, etc. The more I read about the issue, the more I lean toward supporting the reinstatement of the Federal Assault Weapons ban.

An Updated Assessment of the Federal Assault Weapons Ban: Impacts on Gun Markets and Gun Violence, 1994-2003, National Institute of Justice, June 2004 http://www.ncjrs.gov/pdffiles1/nij/grants/204431.pdf

http://www.fbi.gov/about-us/cjis/ucr/crime-in-the-u.s/2010/crime-in-the-u.s.-2010/tables/10shrtbl08.xls

2010 FBI UCR database shows 1.25 mil violent crimes reported (4 mil not reported USDOJ National Victimization report), 322,691 involved a firearm, 14,748 murders, 358 by illegal use of any type of rifle, 162 by use of a semi-auto rifle banned because they look evil.

(firearms were used in 67.5 percent of the Nation’s murders 14,748 = 9,955, 41.4 percent of 367,832 robberies =152,282, and 20.6 percent of aggravated assaults 778,901 =160,453.)

All while in 2010 FBI UCR, we see deaths committed by illegal use of hands, fists, feet, blunt objects and knives accounted over 3,259 deaths, each by themselves accounting for far more deaths than the anti’s mythical boogeyman, the semi-auto rifle banned because they look evil.

The anti’s really should get going on registering and banning hands, fist, feet, all type of blunt objects and all knives as clearly they are a more serious threat in the real world.

I ask, because I don't believe most people who support gun control legislation view gun owners in that way. Something like 75 percent of Americans do not support a ban on handguns, but it's pretty evenly split on the assault weapon ban. People may disagree with how to handle the issue, but your view on it seems pretty extreme.

Additional gun control

Additional gun control legislation will further tarnish our Constitutional freedoms

By Oscar Y. Harward

"Those who have sought the most in gun control have sought the least in the punishment of criminals." - Robert J. Kukla

As we read, listen, and/or watch the news concerning a criminal tragedy of shooting children and adults as recently occurred in Newtown, Connecticut, and/or the violent lawbreaker who fired a rifle directed at Firemen in Webster, New York, the Liberals immediate remedy is to legislate more gun control. The criminality with guns is not our problems; criminal individuals and others with deranged minds are.

Journal News’ publication of the New York citizens’ lawful purchasers’ of gun permits is just as serious of an invasion of each individual’s privacy rights as if Journal News’ privacy rights invasion(s) were in each and every individual’s own bedroom(s).

The foremost problems of illegal gun activities are the criminal elements and their political leaders within (y)our own Liberal government agencies.

Evidence may prove that several associates in President Obama’s administration, including the US Justice Department, and members of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) acted in the Fast and Furious plot while selling and/or approving the sale of automatic rifles, shotguns, and pistols, to a Mexican drug cartel; weapons that were used in murdering 3 innocent Americans and hundreds of Mexicans. Our Justice Department and/or ATF had devised a scheme in an attempt to blame U.S. firearms manufacturers as scapegoats for this criminal violence.

Government gun control is nothing new. History will prove that many Socialist and Communist leaders have become member leaders of the worldwide “Gun Control Hall of Fame” who include: National Socialist Leader and Reich Chancellor of Nazi Germany, Adolph Hitler; Communist Party Chairman and founder of the People's Republic of China, Mao Tse-Tung; Cambodian’s Khmer Rouge leader Pol Pot; and Soviet Union’s Joseph Stalin who have become directly responsible for millions of innocent deaths with their own government’s gun control.

When guns are confiscated by government(s), only criminals and government(s) have guns; then law-abiding voices become easier targets.

President Obama, Liberal Capitol Hill Democrats, Liberal main-stream Medias, and Liberal Academia are pounding their Liberal political agenda and silencing most Conservative by limiting or even denying any open forum in the Liberal Medias.

It is Liberal Democrat lawmakers, Liberal main-stream Medias, and Liberal Academia who spotlight Congress and States’ Legislatures into softening and/or decriminalizing more criminal acts; then demands more gun control legislation as a solution to the lawless craziness within our society.

It is our US Military who have used rifles and other weapons of war to defeat other nations, on foreign land and waters, and through the air without warfare within our own homeland in defeating enemy nations.

Japanese Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto: “You cannot invade the mainland United States. There would be a rifle behind each blade of grass.”

The 2nd Amendment of our US Constitution was crafted by our Founding Fathers to prevent a lawless and mutinous government from confiscating our weapons of protection.

“According to the FBI annual crime statistics, the number of murders committed annually with hammers and clubs far outnumbers the number of murders committed with a rifle.” Are Liberal Capitol Hill Democrats, Liberal main-stream Medias, and Liberal Academia proceeding to support banning hammers?

Under our 2nd Amendment freedoms, it should be unconstitutional for law-abiding citizen(s) to be required in any state to complete any government form(s) before purchasing any hunting rifle, shotgun, or pistol. A National Instant Criminal Background Check System investigation should and would immediately qualify or deny each individual’s right to purchase a hunting rifle, shotgun, or pistol. The criminality of using a hunting rifle, shotgun, or pistol is most feared by law-abiding citizens whenever that weapon is used by a lawless and mutinous government, as well as by unlawful and psychologically ill individuals.

Even less than a perfect solution, a m more comprehensive National Instant Criminal Background Check System can fix these glitches more quickly, accurately, effectively, and less expensive than any government(s) current laws and/or added legislation(s).

Our USA has become a nation with absent, and somewhat, lawless leadership of elected and appointed individuals who choose to obey or disobey our Constitution and US Code as they choose. Furthermore, these lawless criminal officials are not being investigated, arrested, prosecuted, and if found guilty, sentenced to prison.

Any further gun control legislation will further tarnish (y)our Constitutional freedoms.

Criminals don't care about

Criminals don't care about gun laws and many gun owners don't understand the Second Amendment. The first part of this section of The Bill Of Rights specifies A WELL REGULATED MILITIA which sets up the conditions for what follows.

Many gun owners call for the right to own any weapon that can be manufactured. Why should we use their interpretation of the Second Amendment when their command of the English language includes misspelling of words such as DISARM, GUARDS, COURSE, YOU'RE, EITHER, BELIEVE and LYING?

There is a middle ground between having all guns BANNED and a free for all. If someone feels a need for a weapon that doesn't need reloading, maybe they need to learn how to be a better shot.

You're right, criminals don't care about gun laws, and wouldn't obey any new ones any more than they do the existing ones.

Many more gun owners DO understand the Second Amendment and DO NOT "...call for the right to own any weapon that can be manufactured."

And where in the Supreme Court's ruling does it say that?

I took am amazed and appaled

I took am amazed and appaled at how badly our school system has gotten where people dont even understand basic english composition!

The second amendment as RATIFIED by the state’s.

“A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the People to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.”

Maybe you can explain how for the entire history of English language, that the independent clause, a complete sentence capable of conveying a clear meaning, and must first exist for a dependent clause to have meaning, has always set the meaning of the complex sentence. (“the right of the People to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed”)

Yet some now infer the dependent clause, an incomplete sentence, incapable of conveying a clear meaning (A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free State) is now the determinator of the complex sentence meaning and history and English scholars have all been wrong throughout the history of written English. Have at it, but warn us when Hades will be freezing over for you actually having data to support your claim.

http://www.writingcentre.uottawa.ca/hypergrammar/sntstrct.html Lets see, have you removed the 30 plus references from the congressional writings 1774-1789 & the federalist papers showing well regulated as to meaning well trained in the arts of war? Much less all those dictionaries that say the same thing? No, you haven’t. Reference Karpeles Museum, CA.

http://www.rain.org/%7Ekarpeles/

Maybe you removed that original draft of what became the second amendment. You know, the one that was clearly written as a collective right, but then was changed to what exists today. Why did our founding fathers change the amendment draft if it was what they wanted? Oh that’s right, actions do speak louder than words. Ref Karpeles Museum, CA again.

original proposed draft
of
the right to keep and bear arms
of the
BILL of RIGHTS
(17 TH of 20 amendments) on display at the Karpeles Manuscript Library
Santa Ana, California "That the people have a right to keep and bear arms; that a well regulated Militia composed of the body of the people trained to arms is the proper, natural and safe defense of a free State. That standing armies in time of peace are dangerous to liberty, and therefore ought to be avoided as far as the circumstances and protection of the community will admit; and that in all cases the military should be under strict subordination to and governed by the civil power."

http://www.wemett.net/2nd_amendment_(original_draft).html

Then of course, here is the logic failure the anti’s always have. They always fail to prove, that the militia existed before the armed individual. The anti’s always fail to prove that a collective right can exist without the individual right first existing as how does a collective begin, oh that’s right, pre-existing individuals come together to form said collective, DOOOHH!

Funny how all that was before the 2008 rulings eh?

Funny how in the 2008 Heller ruling all 9 justices agreed that bearing arms was an individual right. That 5-4 vote was on the constitutionality of the Washington D.C. gun ban, read it, you will see!

10 USC § 311 - Militia: composition and classes (a) The militia of the United States consists of all able-bodied males at least 17 years of age and, except as provided in section 313 of title 32, under 45 years of age who are, or who have made a declaration of intention to become, citizens of the United States and of female citizens of the United States who are members of the National Guard.
