Miley Cyrus often flashes her body on TV and in photos for shock value and CD sales, but she recently lifted her top to promote the right for women to breastfeed in public and to be topless on public beaches.

Cyrus tweeted the topless picture on Dec. 14, but did cover her breasts with "Merry Christmas" greetings and included the caption: "Merry Christmas THANK YOU NY for being one of the few states to @freethenipple."

Of course. the pop singer had her tongue sticking out as well.

Apparently, Cyrus was inspired by a documentary film entitled “Free the Nipple” by Linda Esco, notes Salon.com.

Writing on the crowd-sourcing site FundAnything.com, Esco states:

By supporting, "FREE THE NIPPLE" you become part of the real life revolution. We need new heroes. Together we can free our country from these backward censorship laws that force police to arrest women for the most basic human right, to breastfeed your child in public or to be topless on a beach. My dream is that this movie will help change the ridiculous censorship laws in this country by inspiring new laws to de-criminalize the female body.

Esco is trying to raise money to distribute her completed film, which got an NC-17 rating, because movie theaters don't normally show a film with that rating.

The "Free the Nipple" Facebook page has also been banned per this screenshot uploaded by Esco to Dropbox.com.
