After being bashed by film critic, Rex Reed, Melissa McCarthy’s own cousin, actress/author, Jenny McCarthy, has come out to defend her.

Recently, Reed included some insults directed at Melissa in his review of her film, Identity Theft, calling her a “female hippo,” and “tractor-sized,” but cousin Jenny had some words of her own for Reed. She states:

“I don’t have the whole story, but I do know that, after being in this business 20 years, it’s really crummy that you get attacked in your personal life in general… That’s obnoxious in itself. For anyone to attack like that, it’s just wrong and hurtful, and it doesn’t do anyone any good – not even Rex Reed, you know? She’s very talented and people know that so he can go to hell.”

Not to be outdone, Paul Feig, director of Bridesmaids, in which Melissa snagged an Oscar nomination for her role, is a bit more direct in defending Melissa. Feig tweets:

“For his catty and school bully name-calling of the supremely talented Melissa McCarthy, I cordially invite Mr. Rex Reed to go f**k himself.”

Well, at least Feig was nice enough to cordially invite him. I never get invited anywhere.

Reed was quick to defend himself, talking to Mark Simone: “My point was that I object to using health issues like obesity as comic talking points. She is basing her career on being obnoxious and being overweight. And I don’t think that’s funny. I have too many friends that have died of obesity-related illnesses, heart problems and diabetes, and I have actually lost friends to this…I don’t care how much she weighs. I don’t care how much Melissa McCarthy weighs. She wants to be fat? Mark, she’s crying all the way to the bank.”

Someone please tell Reed two things: Melissa isn’t a Barbie, but she is funny, and her job is to do movies, not health campaigns, and two, if you’re going to clarify yourself make sure you don’t look like a bigger douche in the process.

What do you think of Jenny and Feig coming to Melissa’s defense?
