James Franco Blasts Spider-Man Reboot In "Man of Steel" Review

Actor, producer, teacher and author, James Franco, has taken on a new role as a movie critic. In his recent piece for Vice where Franco reviewed the newly released “Man of Steel,” he began the review by first bashing the Spider-Man reboot, “The Amazing Spiderman.”

Franco started the review by reminding his readers that he is no stranger to comic book movies as he starred as Peter Parker’s best friend, Harry Osborn, in “Spider-Man,” which directed by Sam Raimi. The series was released from 2002-2007.

Just a few years later in 2012, Sony Pictures released its version of the comic book series featuring a whole new cast and crew from the original film.

"[The] new Spider-Man series … arose even before there was time to bury the corpse of the old one and enshroud it in the haze of nostalgia," Franco writes.

When questioning why the remake was made so soon, Franco responds: "The answer is, of course, money. We are in the film business, and the studios are owned by large corporations who want to make money."

He added: “In this art form, where so much is spent and so much profit can be made, one criterion for success is inevitably the financial. And when movies become so big that they can make $200 million in one weekend like “The Avengers” did, everyone from studios to filmmakers are going to want to get in on making comic book movies.

James expressed his distaste for “The Amazing Spider-Man” earlier in January as well.

“I mean, they could have strayed a little bit more from the original," Franco told MTV News. "I guess they made a lot of money. Congrats. Good for them. Sam and I moved on, we made 'Oz The Great And Powerful.'"

“The Amazing Spider-Man 2” is now in production.
