'Glee' Star Charice Pempengco Comes Out

Charice Pempengco, known in America for her appearance as Sunshine Corazon on “Glee,” came out about her sexuality on Sunday and admitted she is a lesbian.

The 21-year-old former “Glee” star played a Filipino exchange student in the television series during 2010-2011. She made the decision to reveal her sexuality in her native country during an interview on the Filipino talk show “The Buzz,” according to People magazine.

The show’s host, Boy Abunda, asked Pempengco if she is a lesbian, to which she responded in her native Tagalog language, “Yes I am,” according to People.

During the interview, she also admitted she’s alienated from her mother and brother who cannot accept her sexuality. Pempengco then spoke out to her fans.

"So now I ask for forgiveness from those who don't understand, and those who cannot accept,” she said. “I apologize, I understand you."

She added in the video translated by the website Hollywood Life: "To those who could accept, and who could accept me, thank you very, very much. I just want to say to all of you that I feel very light — that I can leave the house knowing I am not hiding anything."

While recognizing all her fans might not accept her sexuality, according to People magazine, a teary Pempengco explained, “I love myself, that’s why I’m able to do this,” and later added, “now I feel free.”

Pempengco became famous in America after being discovered by Ellen DeGeneres on YouTube, and then performing on “Ellen” in 2007. She later made an appearance on “The Oprah Winfrey Show.” Pempengco has performed with big names such Celine Dion and Andrea Bocelli.
