Comedian Chris Rock made a lavish introduction of Eddie Murphy tonight on the 40th anniversary special of "Saturday Night Live."

Rock recalled how Murphy inspired him to be a comedian and saved the variety series from cancellation in the early 1980s (video below).

"If Saturday Night Live hadn't hired Eddie Murphy, this show would've lasted about half as long as Baywatch," said Rock.

Murphy later walked onstage to a standing ovation, reports Mediaite.com.
