On Thursday night, David Letterman announced that he would be stepping down as host of 'The Late Show' sometime in 2015.

“The man who owns this network, Leslie Moonves, he and I have had a relationship for years and years and years, and... I phoned him just before the program, and I said ‘Leslie, it’s been great, you’ve been great, and the network has been great, but I’m retiring,’” said Letterman, noted the Chicago Times.

Letterman explained his reason for retiring and shared his retirement plans on tonight's show (video below).

“A year from now, I’ll be on a beach with a metal detector,” joked Letterman.

According to EOnline.com, Letterman added, "A couple of days ago, Jane, a lovely woman who does my makeup every night, and you think you got a lousy job, she says to me, ‘Dave, there's really nothing more I can do. I said, ‘OK, fair enough.'"
