Beyonce has been widely praised for her live performance of the National Anthem at President Obama's second inauguration ceremony yesterday, but it turns out that she was actually lip synching.
An unnamed spokesman for the Marine Corps Band, who provided the music for the song, said that Beyonce mimed to a pre-recorded track of the song, reports the Daily Mail.
Beyonce dramatically ripped out her earpiece during the song, a move that many singers do when they are unable to hear themselves live, which was unnecessary in this case.
Millions of people, who watched the inauguration, did not know about the fake performance, but members of the press observed that the musicians in the Marine Corps Band were not actually playing their instruments during the song, reports the Washingtonian.
The band was pretending blow into their instruments, while their conductor directed the band for the TV cameras.
The spokesman for the band told the Times of London: "We did pre-record it and it was Beyonce's decision at the last minute to go with the pre-recorded version."
However, Kelly Clarkson, who performed before Beyonce, actually sang live.
Beyonce is scheduled to sing (or lip sync) at the upcoming Super Bowl.
