Betty White 91, Golden Girl's Birthday Today

| by Michael Allen

Actress Betty White turned 91 today and celebrated her birthday by asking fans to donate to the Morris Animal foundation, reports UPI.com.

White wrote in a blog for HuffingtonPost.com: "Animals are near and dear to my heart, and I've devoted my life to trying to improve their lives. Since a girl like me already has more than I could hope for, I'm asking fellow animal lovers for a special birthday gift this year. To help celebrate my 91st birthday on January 17, please help me raise $10,000 for Morris Animal Foundation."

As a present, the Lifeline Program gave White a red-tailed boa constrictor named 'Jacob' from the Los Angeles Zoo and Botanical Gardens, reports People magazine.

White started her career in the early days of radio, but recently has appeared on 'Community,' '30 Rock' and 'The Middle,' not to mention her comeback on TV Land's 'Hot in Cleveland.'

Currently, White has a hit reality show 'Off Their Rockers' on NBC, where seniors play pranks on people as a hidden camera records the laughs.

Ironically, White nearly left the biz before making it big on the 'Mary Tyler Moore Show' in the 1970s.

Her showbiz career could have been cut short if she stayed with second husband Lane Allan, who wanted White to stop working and focus on family life.

White recalled: "He didn't want me to be in show business. When you have a calling you have to follow it, so I made the choice, blew the marriage and I've never regretted it."

White married the love of her life, TV host Allen Ludden, in 1963 and remained married until his death in 1981.
