We’ve all heard the Cam Newton comparisons. Is he the next Jamarcus Russell or is he Ben Roethlisberger? Now, the latest comparison to grab attention is New York Jets’ wide receiver, Brad Smith. Obviously, Cam is a much bigger quarterback than Smith was at Missouri but they both were run first and one of the fastest guys on the field. But, I have a rather different take. I believe that we’ve seen the Cam Newton movie before, it was back in 2006 and it was then titled Reggie Bush.
Of course Bush didn’t play quarterback at USC. That’s not the likeness that I see. Everything being said now by Newton’s supporters, was said about Bush back then. When you watched Cam and Reggie in college, they both were the most dynamic player on the field. They both were amazing in the running game. They looked like men amongst boys, as if they were running full speed and everyone else was jogging.
Reggie found out in the NFL that everyone plays at a higher level. In college Newton and Bush were facing maybe one or two stellar NFL defensive standouts a game. In the NFL they face 11 every week. Bush hasn’t been able to depend on his natural ability in the NFL as he did in college. No longer can he just bounce outside the tackles every time the inside is blocked up. The same holds true for Newton. When his young receivers are covered, he isn’t going to be able to just tuck the ball and run. Cam Newton will struggle to adjust and with players like these that have won at every level, it isn’t easy to go to one of the worst teams.
Newton also has issues surrounding his college career, as did Bush. Reggie is starting to show some of those character concerns now that people question since it was found out that he took money during his college career. Bush tweeted last week about how much he’s enjoying the lockout and complained about practicing in 100 degree heat for free. Newton also made headlines at Florida taking another student’s laptop and at Auburn with the stories of his family taking money. He made it worse at the combine by stating that he wants to be known as an entertainer and an icon. I’m a firm believer that money intensifies people’s flaws. If you’re arrogant and egotistical when you’re broke, you’ll be impossible to deal with when you start making $10 million plus per season.

Reggie has been consistently out played in New Orleans and is better as a third down back or a slot receiver than he is a traditional running back. If Newton’s sequel continues to mimic the original version of this movie, then you can expect a career of controversial statements and a backup quarterback role with the occasional visit from the icon playing the role of the “wildcat”.
With Cam Newton going to a team with a rookie head coach, no veteran leadership, a young core of offensive weapons around him, and a losing atmosphere, go ahead and label this movie as a dramatic comedy with bad acting and a surprising early exit from the lead character. We’ve already seen this movie, so go ahead and pencil him in for his moronic twitter comments and pick him out the next Kardashian. Let’s see, Reggie had Kim, Lamar Odom has Khloe, so I think that leaves Kourtney. Or he could go after the older looking woman in the family, I think her name is Bruce…….
