Broncos Tim Tebow: Only Top 25 Pick Not Playing

| by

Do you want to know why the Denver Broncos have perhaps the most average, painfully mediocre sports franchise of the last 12 seasons? Why they have been slowly spinning like zombies through a perpetual cycle of football purgatory since John Elway left?

Because they constantly, assuredly make bad personnel decisions. Sure enough. It's not even October and the team's latest boner has been confirmed. But before we get to the alarming absence of Tim Tebow, we should point out these boners also involve coaches. And they confirm that bad hires lead to more bad hires.

Owner Pat Bowlen was right to fire Mike Shanahan after TMFKTM (The Man Formerly Known as The Mastermind) became allergic to winning big games -- and watched his defense get run over like, um, Poland circa 1939.

But Bowlen made a humongaloid mistake hiring Josh McDaniels -- an unproven, untested novice for his replacement. (Speaking of Charlie Weiss and Romeo Crennel, the Pats surly general Bill Belichick sure can prep those assistants for head coaching jobs, can't he?) Now Bowlen has to stick with young Joshua to save face.

Who is signing off on decisions at Broncos Headquarters?

Whether it's making a bizarre trade for an unnecessary Brady Quinn, giving away superstar Brandon Marshall for a pair of used cleats and a mascot to be named later, or wasting a first round draft pick on a guy who can't even beat out Kyle Orton, the long orange-and-blue nightmare continues.

You want proof the Broncos are destined for yet another 8-8 type season this year and next? Let's do a quick exercise. Go down the list of the first 25 picks from the 2010 Draft. Out of all the names below, there is exactly one guy -- another individual sat because he was injured -- who didn't play a single down this past week. If you guessed that one guy was Tim Tebow, you win a free Tebow jersey (great because it never gets dirty).

Don't give me the "he's not ready yet" refrain. Don't give me the "John Elway was terrible in 1983 and look how that turned out" argument. That was 27 years ago and we didn't even have iPods. You're either moving forward or moving backward... fast. And when you take a guy in the first round -- and give him $10 million like Denver did with Tebow -- he better contribute right away in some capacity. We're now 1/8th of the season done, the Broncos are a predictable .500, and Tim Tebow has yet to take one meaningful snap.

Let's review: Tebow must prove his value now. Not in 2012. Denver has a serious problem if its first round pick can't beat out a QB like Kyle Orton, who has, say it with me, so-so skills but will never lead a franchise to playoff wins. And the Broncos have even bigger problems if that top pick can't at least contribute in some type of Wildcat facet. Isn't that why he was drafted in the first place?

You spent $10 million for a guy who is making zero impact. Deal with it.
